Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I must unplug and restart my new Officejet Pro 9125e printer to eliminate an erroneous "out of paper' error message and start printing again after I remove HP photo paper and fill the tray with plain paper. HP support has not been able to help after 3 live chats with agents (each with a different case number).

Hi @lewhab

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue:

1. Check Paper Settings

  • Ensure that the printer settings match the type of paper loaded in the tray.
  • Go to Printers & Scanners in Windows settings, select your printer, and click on Manage > Printing preferences. Make sure the correct paper type is selected.

2. Inspect Paper Tray

  • Ensure that the paper is loaded correctly in the tray. The paper should be aligned and not overfilled.
  • Check for any obstructions in the paper path or inside the tray.

3. Reset Printer Settings

  • Navigate to the printer’s settings menu and perform a factory reset. This can sometimes clear persistent errors.

4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Check for firmware updates for your printer:
    • Visit the HP Support website.
    • Search for your printer model and check for available firmware updates. Follow the instructions to install any updates.

5. Clear Print Queue

  • Sometimes, jobs stuck in the print queue can cause issues. Clear the print queue:
    • Open Printers & Scanners in Windows settings.
    • Select your printer, click on Open queue, and cancel any pending jobs.

6. Perform a Power Reset

  • Unplug the printer from the power source and wait for about 60 seconds before plugging it back in.
  • This can help reset the printer’s internal settings.

I was unable to switch from HP photo paper to plain paper without unplugging and resetting my HP OfficeJet 9125e printer. to avoid a false out-of-paper error message and loss of printing. I followed all the suggestions on HP's online support sites to no avail. In addition, a tech support person from HP took control of my computer to fix the problem, but the problem persisted. After I was about to request a warranty replacement, an HP tech support person, Raj2111, sent me a page of suggestions. I had previously tried all of his suggestions except for a reset to factory defaults. After performing this reset, I have now been able to successfully switch from HP photo to plain paper in several tests. I will amend this report if the problem reappears.
