My printer is 11 years old.
I was getting the error code tri-color ink not compatible, even though I just printed something 5 minutes before, so I bought a new ink cartridge. Now five days later I am getting an error code about the filter. I had just printed 12 copies and went to print one more, when this happened.
I deleted the printer and then downloaded the drivers again and reinstalled the printer but it is still happening.
Help! I don't want to have to buy a new printer.

I see that I need to download HP Drivers v. 5.1 as found here https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-photosmart-c4400-all-in-one-printer-series/36555...
But even when I do, the computer reports that the printer is running v. 5.0.5
So the likely problem is that the driver link is connected to the 5.0 drivers, not the 5.1 drivers. HP please fix this.
That said, it still does not explain why the printer worked yesterday, but not today.

I saw this from HP:
We unintentionally revoked credentials on some older versions of Mac drivers. This caused a temporary disruption for those customers and we are working with Apple to restore the drivers. In the meantime, we recommend users experiencing this problem to uninstall the HP driver and use the native AirPrint driver to print to their printer.

I tried following the links on the HP website to contact support, but it only loops to the same page with only one option. That option is to chat, but the link to the chat function is out of date and not secure.
Hopefully someone from HP will post here soon.
