Hey,
I'm trying to print from a Macbook air to a HP Photosmart C4400 series printer. (MacBook Air is an 8,1 from 2018)
It is hooked up to the macbook air via usb and usb to usb-c adaptor. It has been working for years, up until a few days ago.
This printer is older and is not on the list for being compatible with AirPrint.
I don't know the operating system it was running when this error first happened, because this is my girlfriend's laptop and she just updated it to Catalina 10.15.7 today to try and fix the problem. The update also did nothing.
When I try to print,
I get an error: stopped - 'filter' failed
I have gone in to HD > Library > Printers > HP
and i've deleted the folder and reinstalled the drivers from HP multiple times. Nothing has changed it.
I've tried printing pdfs from preview, chrome, MS word, all with the same result.
I can print from my macbook pro laptop, and it works, but this Macbook air is my girlfriend's computer, and it does not work right now. I'm curious how to fix this.
I cannot open the HP Utility, it when I attempt to see it, this error log comes up.

The solution is to download (and install) this package which will update drivers AND THE CERTIFICATE:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essen...
If the link comes up blank, try right clicking and saving it. If you install this package and still have trouble, try uninstalling your printer and reinstalling.
Easy Admin did nothing. Easy Startup did nothing. 5.1 drivers did nothing. This worked for me!
If this solved your issue, please thumbs up and mark as solved!
