A warm welcome to HP Forums! This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.
Power resetting the printer, performing an automated and manual cleaning may resolve the issue. Let's try these steps:
1) Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector
2) Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door
3) Remove the power cord from the back of the printer (Do no press the power button)
4) Clean the ink cartridges, refer to solution 4 from this document.
5) Plug the power cord back into the printer
6) Wait for the printer to turn on completely, then install the ink cartridges.
7) On the printer control panel, swipe left on the display, and then touch Setup .
😎 Touch Tools.
9) Swipe up on the display, and then touch Clean Page Smears.
10) On the printer control panel, swipe left on the display, and then touch Setup .
11) Touch Tools, and then touch Clean Cartridges. Touch Yes when prompted to perform the next level of cleaning.
12) On the printer control panel, swipe left on the display, and then touch Setup .
13) Touch Tools.
14) Swipe up on the display, and then touch Align Printer.

@FedM, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Which application are you trying to print from?
Have you tried printing different types of documents like PDF, Word or Webpages and check if the issue persists?
For now, let us try these steps to resolve this issue:
Update the printer firmware
Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your MAC.
Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Also, check for any software updates on MAC
Try making a standalone copy and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.
Keep me posted.
If you feel my post solved your issue, please click “Accept as Solution”, it will help others find the solution. Click the “Kudos/Thumbs Up" on the bottom right to say “Thanks” for helping!

The issue had gone on the next day. I just tried to print the same doc on the next morning and it came good. BTW this is the second time it happens. Last time I tried all the things you are talking about but had no luck, but it started working good the next day.
