I've had my printer for a few years and always used genuine HP cartridges.  I've just tried to replace the empty cartridges with two new, (HP), cartridges and the printer doesn't recognise them!  I've tried a hard reset but that hasn't solved anything. Is there anything else to try, please?

@Ojholly, Welcome to HP Support Community!

To isolate the issue, use the printer in single-cartridge mode. Follow the steps below:

Remove one of the ink cartridges, and then check for the error message to identify the problem ink cartridge.

  1. Open the ink cartridge access door.

The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

  2. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. Press down on either ink cartridge to release it, and then pull the ink cartridge out to remove it from its slot.

  4. Close the ink cartridge access door.

    • If the 'Incompatible Print Cartridge(s)' or the 'Print Cartridge Problem' error message still displays on the computer, continue to the next step.

    • If the computer does not display an error message, replace the tri-color ink cartridge.

  5. Open the ink cartridge access door.

The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

  6. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

  7. Push down on the top of the tri-color cartridge (located on the left side of the carriage) to release it, and then pull it toward you to remove it from its slot.

  8. Slide the black ink cartridge forward into the empty right slot, and then gently push on the upper part of the ink cartridge until it snaps into place.

  9. Close the ink cartridge access door.

    • If the 'Incompatible Print Cartridge(s)' or the 'Print Cartridge Problem' error message still displays on the computer, replace the black and the tri-color cartridge.

    • If the computer does not display an error message, replace the tri-color cartridge.

Try to print.

The faulty ink cartridges can be returned to store or you can reach us out for help.

Thanks for your reply. At this point I have to 'fess' up - I was trying to make my printer accept the wrong type of cartridge, 304 instead of 301! I had re-ordered in a hurry from an old previous orders list, obviously from a time when I had a different printer. My only excuse is that it was a full moon. Soz.
