Our HP 8740 is very new so we are just learning about printing issues.
My question relates to printing on A4 High Gloss Photo Paper. Tray 1 and Tray 2 both contain A4 plain paper normally, when we have an image to print on A4 Glossy paper the control panel will always ask if we would like to modify the size or paper type. When the choice is made at the printer control panel do we need to make the same modifications at the PC?
At the PC under Printer Properties we again have a large selection for paper/quality, but only HP Brochure Glossy 180g seems to fit the bill.
Does Print quality (General Office, Professional, Presentation, and Maximum dpi) change automatically?
The reason for these questions is when I load 1 sheet of A4 Glossy paper into the tray on top of the plain paper and print out, we sometimes get 2 sheets coming through. The glossy paper is blank, the print job is on the plain paper. This is annoying, wasting glossy paper and ink. We are not sure each time what will be produced. Should we remove all the blank paper and just add 1 sheet of glossy paper at a time?
Is the problem incorrect paper selection at the PC, Printer or both?
I have not been able to print 1 good quality photo onto glossy photo paper. Every atempt so far has resulted in either 2 sheets being ejected with the photo printed onto a blank A4 sheet and the glossy paper left blank or when it prints on the glossy photo paper it ends up streaky and smudged. These marks appear to be from the ridges on the ink cartridge cover.
Considering that this printer is only 3 days old and the 2nd printer within 14days I am becoming really concerned.

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.
I understand that you are facing print quality issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer.
This issue could occur if the cartridges are not vented properly or the printhead is not aligned.
Let's go through a few steps to resolve this issue.
And here's the step by step guide for you in the link: Fixing Poor Print Quality
You may also check this link on how to print: Printing Photos (Windows)
Let me know how this works.
You have a good day ahead.

Hello Rainbow23
Thank you for your response to this problem. Can I first start off by saying this is a replacement printer for one that was only 10days old? This printer is only 4days old and prints very well on plain paper and many of the suggestions in ‘Fixing Poor Print Quality’ won’t apply.
We only have problems with Glossy Photo Paper. Why does the printer pick up two A4 pages (1 is plain paper with the printing on it, the other is the glossy paper which is blank)?
Should I remove all the plain paper before adding one sheet of glossy photo paper? I didn’t have to do this with my old HP8500 printer.
When the printer does print on the glossy paper, it comes out streaky. I have tried changing most of the printer paper quality settings to try and rectify this problem but so far nothing seems to work.
I will take a look at the link for Printing Photos (Windows)

Hello DavidSMP
Thank you for your response to my printer issues. Please take a look at my recent problems since I purchased the printer.
· We purchased HP8740 on 14/03/2017, this was sent back to HP and replaced on 23/03/2017.
· Today is 26/03/2017 and you say in your message - Do not get perturbed. The printer will still get replaced by contacting HP phone support.
So, in the space of two weeks I have had two brand new printers.
There is only so times you can uninstalled and re-installed the firmware, software, used several different types and makes of glossy photo paper and large quantities of ink and you want me to go through this for a third time….
I have solved the problem of an extra blank page printing (windows) If all the plain paper is removed from tray1 and replaced with glossy photo paper it seems ok (only 1 page prints)
BUT the page that prints comes out smudged and streaky from the ridges on the ink cartridge door.
The ink is still wet. Despite all of these problems we like the printer but if we can’t print good quality images on different media we may need to look elsewhere.

Hello HP Team and Community. I Have an HP Officejet 8740 printer. Everything works fine until I want to print on professional glossy photopaper (255g/m2). I have tried connecting the printer directly with through a USB port. in the network and wireless. I tried using all the settings for paper and quality options and cleanning the cartridges using the options to correct printing failures that hp recommends. The paper I have is kirkland professional glossy photopaper and it works fine in an old epson inkjet printer that I Have. ¿Can you help me with instructions or a procedure to fix the inconvenience with the printer?
I already tried the steps I found in this post but I continue having the same result.
