Bought this new printer. Setup was pretty straight forward. 

 

Issue: When setting up the "Save to Google Drive" feature for app shortcuts, I get "This app is blocked". 

 

I looked at the error from Google and basically the security standards from HP are not sufficient for the integration. 

Less secure apps & your Google Account

 

I tried contacting HP support and let them know. Possibly hoping that they can create a ticket to their dev/engineering teams to look at this. I'm not looking for solution in real time. But as usual the tech was asking general questions how what I was doing. Very disappointing. 

 

Has anyone gotten this to work? 

 

I've search HP community, reddit and google to see if there was a work around. but no dice. Probably will end up returning it and going back to Brother.

Executive summary:

  1. It broke sometime during the summer of 2024
  2. HP needs to update how their cloud server tries linking to the google cloud account
  3. it has nothing to do with the printer or the hpsmart app - you can reproduce it at admin.hpsmart.com. Don't waste your time troubleshooting printer or apps like I and many others have.
  4. There MAY be a way to configure your google account to allow it to work, but nobody has yet identified what that is. Some people claim theirs is still working, but I'm skeptical (and hopeful at the same time?)
  5. HP has not visibly expressed any interest in solving this, or even acknowledged the problem.
  6. If anyone knows how to configure a google account to allow this connection, many here would love to see it!

I can now confirm that at least some existing google drive accounts that were linked before summer 2024 still work. the issue is with trying to link a new google drive account to the hp cloud. which always or sometimes fails.
IF YOU HAVE a working google drive link, can you try to add another cloud connection to a google drive account and report the results? I'm curious if this works for anyone.
I'm also curious if there is a different between free google drive and corporate/paid google [workspace] drive in this respect.

I had the G account linked since at least 8 months and working.

Got the printer offline for a week.

Upon return, the printer informed the g account expired and a new connection has to be performed.

Then it reproduced your error: went to google.com/devices, input the code, error shown "the app is blocked"
