HP DeskJet 2622 All-in-One Printer
iOS

Written December 2022

As of the last 2-3 weeks, our HP Deskjet 2622 now only prints in black & white when printing from Apple mobile devices.

Printer is set up on wifi connection to home broadband.

- We can print from Windows Laptop/PC in colour no problem

- Scan and print locally on the printer itself all works fine

- Ink levels are fine (HP Instant ink enrolled)

- HP Smart app has been uninstalled, reinstalled - no change

- All app versions are latest (iOS 16+ in use)

- Printer firmware is up to date

- Same issue occurs across 2 iPhones and 2 iPads in our posession.

- Apple print or HP Smart print both default to a b&w preview image. Printing still only B&W

- Like many articles on here, there are no options or menus to switch to colour

- Images appear to be considered PDF extension on the mobile device when printing?

- Printer has been reset, made no change

- Have tried printing by Apple "Print" and also "Print using HP Smart". No change

- When using HP Smart directly and selecting "Print Photo" - selecting the photo states "Unable to open image file"

At a loss to this. Please don't respond without reading the above! Thanks

Solution found!!

So - after a LOT of messing around, including a complete factory reset of my iPad and other apple devices - no progress..

But - after replacing both black and colour cartridges (even though ink has not run out of either) all of a sudden the apple devices all now show print preview in colour and allow colour printing!

Not a clue why this is the case, but neither Apple or HP could fix the problem. Luckily HP had sent me new ink cartridges for instant ink - well the colour one anyway - and the black one turned up in the post yesterday.
Printer was reporting 2/3bar for both old cartridges. But automated HP ink subscription email told me to replace my cartridges anyway.

Worth noting - prior to print preview, the images show in colour on the mobile screen. It's only after "gathering paper information" that it changes and locks to b&w

Hi @PaulHallett,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd like to help!

I see that you're unable to print in color from your iOS device to the HP Deskjet 2622 printer. I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue.

  • Does the printer make photocopies in color?
  • Did you make any changes to the printer or the mobile device recently?
  • Have you tried printing from a different application?

First, remove the HP Smart App.

Restart the iPhone and install the HP Smart app again.

Turn on the printer and make sure ink cartridges are installed and paper is loaded in the tray.

On the Apple device, open Settings, tap Wi-Fi, and then tap the printer with DIRECT in the name (Example: DIRECT-72-HP Officejet Pro 6970) from the list of available networks.

If prompted for a password, type 12345678. This is the default password to log in.

If you created a custom password and do not remember it, go to your printer to get the password. The method to find the password depends on your printer model.

Printers with a control panel display

Touch the Wi-Fi Direct icon or navigate to the Wi-Fi Direct menu.

Go to the Reports menu, and then select Network Summary or Network config. to print a network summary page. Find the Wi-Fi Direct password in the Wi-Fi Direct section.

Press the Information button to print a report with Wi-Fi Direct information. Find the Wi-Fi Direct password in the Wi-Fi Direct section of the printed page.

Press and hold the Wi-Fi Direct button for 3 seconds. Find the Wi-Fi Direct password in the Wi-Fi Direct section of the printed page.

Press the Wireless and Information buttons at the same time. Find the Wi-Fi Direct password in the Wi-Fi Direct section of the printed page.

Press and hold the Resume/Cancel or Resume button for 2-3 seconds to print an information page. Find the Wi-Fi Direct password in the Wi-Fi Direct section of the printed page.

Press and hold the Resume/Cancel or Resume button for 10 seconds to print an information page. Find the Wi-Fi Direct password in the Wi-Fi Direct section of the printed page.

Open the item you want to print, and then tap Print from the app or action menu.

Select your printer from the list of available printers, and then tap Print.

Reconnect to your local Wi-Fi network after the print job completes.

See if you get to print in color after connecting the printer through WiFi Direct.

So - this has now been resolved after 2 calls to HP support.

Turns out that after the factory reset, the cartridges refused to print because they weren’t “enrolled” in HP instant ink, despite being the same cartridges that were enrolled and used before the reset. As we couldn’t print the enrolment code we had to change one of the cartridges. Doing this allowed us to print and re-enroll.

subsequently, colour printing works fine!
HP support suggested that the old colour cartridge was faulty, even tho it would print in colour from a Windows based PC…. I struggle to believe this but it’s all working again anyway.

The printer has once again decided it cannot print in colour from my iPhones or my wife’s.
same problem as before??

have no idea why it’s doing this but it’s close to meeting it’s maker and going in the bin.

Without being rude, I did cover this in my first post - the firmware is already the latest version (confirmed by HP)

there are no drivers installed on Apple iOS devices.
