I have replaced my black cartridge with the one supplied by Instant Ink. After replacement, I can no longer print black. Ink levels show full, no black prints at all.
If I put the old cartridge back in, I do get some black printed, but as expected, its running low on Ink, so quality isn't great, but, it does print something.
The 'new' cartridge I have put in was sent to me some time ago (APR 29 2023) - I can only think its age might be the problem. but I do NOT suspect this!
When I try and 'clean' the heads, HP smart doesn't complete ( I wait around 10 mins then hit cancel), and doesn't print a test page.
If the cartridge is defective, how do I get another (quickly)!
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @wrolfe,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're experiencing issues with your HP 2720e printer not printing black after replacing the cartridge, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem. Here's a step-by-step guide.
Check Ink Levels:
- Ensure that the new black cartridge is installed correctly and that the ink levels are displaying correctly in the printer software.
Clean the Printhead:
- Use the printer's built-in cleaning function to clean the printhead. This can be done through the printer software or directly on the printer control panel.
Print a Test Page:
- Print a test page from the printer software or the printer's control panel. This can help you identify if the issue is with the cartridge or the printhead.
Check for Firmware Updates:
- Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date. Check the HP website for any available firmware updates for your specific printer model.
Inspect the Cartridge:
- Examine the new black cartridge for any protective tapes or covers that may need to be removed before installation. Ensure that the cartridge is securely and correctly seated in the printer.
Try Another Cleaning Cycle:
- Run the printhead cleaning cycle again. Sometimes, it may take a few attempts to clear any blockages.
Use Genuine HP Cartridges:
- Ensure that you are using genuine HP cartridges. Using third-party or refilled cartridges may cause issues with the printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
