My printer is having an alignment issue that is continuing to worsen. It started about a year ago and now it is at the point that the alignment is so off nothing we print can be used. The top od the page starts in about the right place but by the time it gets to the bottom the printing goes off the side of the page. I have tried realigning the printer but it is not helping. I have tried cleaning cartigages and turning the printer off as discussed in another forum. How do i fix this issue?

@chelseademeyers,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand you are having issues related to your HP Printer. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

Splendid effort and fabulous description of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score.  You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you here. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you recently made any changes on the printer before the issue started?

Have you tried to clean the printhead and ink cartridges?

Have you tried to align the printer?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Alternatively, try the steps suggested in the support document for - HP Inkjet Printers - 'Alignment Unsuccessful' Error Message Displays

Align the printer:

Aligning the ink cartridges correctly aligns the printhead with the printer. Align the printer from the printer control panel, then evaluate the results.

  1. Make sure to load the input tray with plain, white paper.

  2. On the printer control panel, swipe the display to the left, and then touch Setup.

  3. Touch Tools.

  4. Swipe up on the display, then touch Align Printer.

    An alignment page prints.

  5. Wait for the alignment page to fully eject from the printer.

       NOTE:

Before a print job, the printer automatically extends the output tray extender. Do not push in the output tray extender until the print job is complete.

  6. Lift the scanner lid.

  7. Place the alignment page with the print side down on the scanner glass. Position it according to the engraved guides around the glass.

Image: Placing the alignment page on the scanner glass

  8. Close the scanner lid, then touch OK

The printer aligns the ink cartridges.

  9. Try to print again.

    • If these steps resolved the issue, you can stop troubleshooting.

    • If the printout shows track marks or smears, continue to the next step to manually clean the area around the ink nozzles.

    • If these steps did not resolve the issue, and the printout does not show track marks or smears, skip to the step to replace the problem ink cartridge.

Thank you for your assistance.

We ended up cleaning what we believe is the timing/encoder strip. After cleaning and doing an alignment the printer is back to working normally.
