Environment: HP Laptop Pavilion, Win 8.1, Office 2013 (Word), HP Officejet Pro 6230. (All software up-to-date with versions/patches)
I just installed the printer. I use two-sided printing a great deal. If I print (from Word 2013), and select two-sided printing, the top margin is ignored on the odd numbered pages. Printing starts at the top edge of the paper. Then, the even numbered pages print lower on the page.
(Selections: Paper Type=Plain; Print Quality=Normal; Pages Per Sheet=1; Borderless=Off; Print on Both Sides=Flip on Long Edge)
If I print the same document one page at a time (and manually flip the paper), the document prints margins precisely.

The issue is now resolved. The symptoms were on all printng except for envelopes (clue). Top and bottom margins off by approximately 0.50 inch. Here is a brief summary:
- Another 6230 was sent out. Same problem.
- Several drivers of similar printers on the replacement 6230 were tried. Same problem.
- The 6230 has a Print Diagnostics Page which has horizontal rules at the top and bottom of page. The top horizontal rule printed 0.25" from the edge and the bottom printed 0.75 inch from the bottom. Even the HP software was printing with the same difference as the third party software applications.
- A different printer was sent out. Same problem. Software downloads directly from HP.
- A third, different printer was sent out. Same problem.
I started writing software in 1970. So, I've done a tad bit of debugging and troubleshooting. But, this was baffling to both the engineer and to me. I took a weekend to review. The problem had rung a bell: I had a customer once in the Netherlands. We had different document standards. We have "Letter" (8.5x11) and they have A4, of which the paper sizes were different by approx. 0.50 inch.
I went to the printer's settings via Printer Assistant. Paper size was set to A4. I set it to Letter. Printed perfectly.
But, the default was set to A4. Monday morning the HP engineer took me through the steps of reconfiguring the printer. Uncertain why it had defaulted to A4. I always answer USA/English to all specs. I checked the HP laptop and it's set to USA/English.
That resolved the problem.
This is the reason I selected HP years ago. It's "insurance." There are cheaper generics. But, in the event of a problem beyond my pay grade I would like to get the support after the sale. I received excellent suupport.
Thanks to you folks here as well.

Thanks for the reply. The link refers to Word 2007. I have 2013. I have tried a variety of margins in Word. No changes.
The 6230 replaces a 6600. The 6600 printing function no longer works. I am trying to print the same docs on the 6230. No format changes whatsoever. They printed fine, as is, on the 6600 when it was working.
I am now printing more docs on the 6230. It seems as if the 6230 is not recognizing any of the top/bottom margins.

Thanks for replying with the information.
I appreciate the steps you have performed and have done a great job.
I request you to go through the following steps and check if everything is taken care.
To print on both sides of the page (Windows)
1. From your software, select Print.
2. Make sure your printer is selected.
3. Click the button that opens the Properties dialog box. Depending on your software application, this button might be called Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer Properties, Printer, or Preferences. NOTE: To set print settings for all print jobs, make the changes in the HP software provided with the printer. For more information on the HP software, see Printer management tools.
4. Select the appropriate options.
● On the Layout tab, select Portrait or Landscape orientation, and select Flip on Long Edge or Flip on Short Edge from the Print on Both Sides drop-down list.
● On the Paper/Quality tab, select the appropriate paper type from the Media drop-down list in the Tray Selection area, and then select the appropriate print quality in the Quality Settings area.
● Click the Advanced button, in the Paper/Output area, select the appropriate paper size from the Paper Size drop-down list.
NOTE: If you change the Paper Size ensure that you have loaded the correct paper and set the paper size on the printer control panel to match. For more printing options, see Tips for print success.
5. Click OK to print.
Keep me posted 🙂

Yes, of course. These are Printing 101. These have been selected years ago. As I mentioned, I have been using a 6600. Just moved to the 6230. But, the top/bottom margins seen very random.
Since my last post, I have also tried full page justification -- allows the page to be justified top, center, etc. This has no effect.

Good suggestion. I printed a pdf file from Adobe Acrobat. Similar problem. Except, the problem is worse. Not only is there no margin, the top of the text on page 1 was off the top of the page. I printed same file singe page and it printed correctly. Since the problem occurs when printing from two different software packages, and page 1 margin of each document is ignored while two-sided printing, doesn't this indicate a software problem?

Thank you for the update.
Superb job on trying the different steps to isolate the issue.
Let's try to fix the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling the printer driver software by the following method.
Step 1:
Uninstalling the Printer from the computer.
1> In Windows search for and open Programs and features
2>Select your HP Printer
3>Select Uninstall
4>In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers.
5>In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP Printer.
If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete or 'Remove Device'
6>Open up the run command with the "Windows key +R" key combo.
7>Type printui.exe /s and click ok
8>Click on the "drivers" tab.
9>Look for Hp Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10>Select Ok
11>Select Apply and Okon the Printer Server Properties windows
12>Close Devices and printers.
Step2: Please refer the link to download the full feature software: http://hp.care/2bYZled
Let me know how it goes, cheers:)

I completely uninstalled the printer software/drivers. I went to this link from your reply (http://hp.care/2bYZled), but this was for a 4520 printer. So, I searched for the 6230 software and used this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/closure/HP-OfficeJet-Pro-6230-ePrinter-series/539031... .
Installed successfully. I printed my usual daily summary from Word 2013. Same result as before. I printed the PDF from Adobe Acrobat. Same result as before. There is a problem on the odd number pages, including page 1.
Should I have installed the 4520 software?

One additional symptom: The even number pages seem to be "justified" towards the bottom of the page. Thus, if one has a 0.5 inch margin all the way round, the even numbered pages justify to 0.5 inch at the bottom and leave extra space at the top of the page.
