My HP 7610 has been working beautifully for a couple years. We've replaced the ink tanks a few times on them without issue. Of course, it will stop printing black if one of the color cartridges runs out, which I still think is absurd. Trying to be thrifty, I bought off-brand cartridges, with the intent of only replacing the Magenta, but Cyan was low as well. I replaced Cyan and Magenta, but the Magenta causes the printer to give a "A printer problem has occurred. Turn off the printer and turn it on again" error.
Figuring the issue was the off-brand cartridge, I tried a replacement of the same brand. (Since Cyan of that brand worked fine) That didn't work. I tried a -different- off-brand. That didn't work either. Finally biting the bullet, I bought and HP Genuine cartridge... And THAT one doesn't work either. The only one that works is the empty HP one.
So, now I'm stuck with a ton of cartridges and I just cannot get this thing to work, at all, anymore. I'm at my wits end and have no clue what to do. I did what HP wanted and have nothing to show for it.

Hi @Chazus,
Welcome to the HP Support Community
I understand you are getting an error message "A printer problem has occurred. Turn off the printer and turn it on again" on your HP Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
To assist better:
- Are you using genuine HP ink cartridges?
- Does the copy print out the same way?
- Was there any recent update on the printer prior to the issue?
- Was there any paper jam or carriage jam issue on the printer recently?
While you respond to that, Let's perform a power drain:
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Remove USB cable, if present.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
- Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle
Update the printer firmware
- Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your product

If the issue persists, then please follow the steps mentioned in this document: HP OfficeJet Printers - 'Printer Failure' Error

I've followed all of the above steps already, each one.
That said, I cannot get a support request because the serial number on the side of the printer is not recognized by HP, furthermore when I go into web services for the printer, not only is the Serial Number different than the side of the printer, but it is also not recognized by HP, so no support request can be made.
