Hi,
I have a HP officejet Pro 7740 printer which is showing an error.
The error is "Tray 2 empty or open". The tray has been loaded with A3 paper and is closed. When the tray is opened and closed it has stopped being recognised. I have tried various "fixes" including, updating drivers, resetting and cleaning the tray and the area it is inserted in.
I noticed that there are sensors which move up and down when the tray is inserted into the area and when the tray 1 sensor is moved it is picked up on the screen. This does not happen for tray 2. My machine is now out of warranty. Is there a way of having this repaired?

@harvir93, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
If the sensors in Tray 2 have gone bad, this is a hardware issue. Unfortunately, it cannot be repaired.
Perform the steps mentioned in this document - An 'Out of Paper' error displays, printer does not pick paper
By default, the printer draws paper from Tray 1. If Tray 1 is empty and Tray 2 is installed and contains paper, the printer draws paper from Tray 2. You can change the behaviors using the following features:
● Default Tray: Set the default tray from which the printer draws paper first when paper of the same size is loaded in both Tray 1 and Tray 2.
● Tray Lock: Lock a tray to prevent it from accidental use; for example, when you have loaded special paper (such as letterhead or preprinted paper). The printer will not use a locked tray even when the other tray is empty.
Note: For a better experience, load only one type of paper in a tray. Tray 2 supports only plain paper.
Update the printer firmware

If the issue persists and if the printer is out of warranty, I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.

Thanks for your response.
yes there was an issue with the sensor. After the post I took the side panel off and saw that two of the wires and the flex cable to the sensor had been broken. I have now repaired the wires and have had to order a replacement for the flex cable. This should resolve the problem. Not sure how these wires have been broken.
thanks for your help nonetheless.

Glad to know that you were able to repair it yourself. This is not a customer replaceable part and hence HP sends a replacement printer if under warranty.
Keep me posted for any other assistance.
