I am trying to print on a 5.5 x 5.5 envelope. I have been able to update the custom paper size in my print settings on my computer (Mac Sonoma 14.0) but when I try to print on my HP 8028e I get a message that the paper size does not match. When trying to select the correct paper size, the 5.5x5.5 is not listed and there is no option to print on a custom size. I have checked many online threads and the directions to create a custom paper size in printer settings, through HP smart, and EWS do not work.

Is there an option to print on these envelopes? Can I bypass the paper matching feature on the printer itself?

Welcome to the HP English Community --

I don't think you can bypass the requirement for the printer to know you are using other than one of the standard paper sizes.

If true, it does not make sense (to me) that the printer supports Custom size paper forms but EWS or the printer control panel cannot be made aware of the need for size "Custom".

@greenturtle

What is the magic to alert the HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e  printer control panel OR the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to the need for size Custom paper ??  Thanks for any words of wisdom.

--------------------------------------------

General Example - EWS - Tray and Paper

IF your version of the HP Smart app is similar enough to the Windows version, then the following might be helpful.

If not, then apologies for "false hope".

===================================

Printer - Specifications

First, check for custom paper size support

Product Specifications for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e All-in-One Printer (1K7K7A)

Media sizes, custom (metric)
Tray 1: 76.2 x 127 to 215.9 x 355.6 mm
Media sizes, custom (U.S. standard)
Tray 1: 3 x 5 to 8.5 x 14 in

===================================

Custom Paper Size Form

Next, create Custom Paper Size Form

HP Document: HP Printers - Creating Custom Paper Sizes

Note

Presumably, even lacking the full driver solution software, once the Custom Paper size form is created, the printer app(s) can make use of the new paper size.

Printer - Job Configuration

Here is where the paths diverge - perhaps too much to be useful.

Windows adds the Custom Paper Size form to the list of available paper sizes.

As a matter of note, the newest paper sizes are added to the bottom of the list -- scroll down when checking the drop-down list in "Paper Size".

One more note about the example:

The sample shows a PDF format document (supported by HP Smart).  PDF files generally inherit the margins from their parent Word documents -- in the case of an envelope document, when Exported to PDF, the margins are not always ideal for address placement.

Example - HP Smart - Windows - Simple PDF Print - #10 envelope

Side Bar

Not working?

Create your document in Word, take a snip (screenshot) of the envelope -

Crop the edges to the size of the document / envelope

Save snipped content as an image file (.jpg)

Print as an Image on the custom size envelope

I've done this in Windows when necessary (or easier) - might work in MacOS...

Hi @Dragon-Fur  @Gina_Ho_42

Thanks for the great question.

Not sure of a way change that.

One workaround that I would do is just to select normal (letter size) but create the address/text to be exactly where the Custom paper size (envelope) is to be printed.

It might take some trial and error but once that works, that would be the template for future print jobs.

Hope that helps!
