8600 Plus Printer said that Black ink was out. Do you want to use color? I said yes. Printed about 5 pages and everything was fine. Ordered new Black XL HP brand cartridge. Installed and it and printer said Printer or Ink failure. Removed new Black and reinserted old black. Printer said out of yellow. Ordered new Yellow XL HP cartridge. Installed new Black XL and new Yellow XL. Printer says one or more cartridges appear to be damaged (Yellow and Black). I cannot get the printer to recognize that the cartridges are new and Genuine HP. I have read that there was a software update in April of 2020 that was meant to deter aftermarket or refilled cartridges. Apparently this update took out legitimate new HP cartridges too? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to HP Community

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

Please try these steps

- Turn on the printer.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer. If your printer has a network or wireless connection, leave it connected.
- Remove the ink cartridges from the printer and clean the electrical contacts with a lint free cloth
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet or power strip.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to a wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
- Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
- Reinsert the ink cartridges, and then close the ink cartridge access door.
- If you receive a prompt to print a calibration page, do so.

Also ensure the printer has the latest Firmware. Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168

Hello KrazyToad,

I followed your instructions including the firmware update. The same message comes back up on the screen. That the new cartridges from HP are damaged. I'll also note that the ink level icon on the home screen shows no ink in the tiny droplets and has a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in the center hovering over the empty ink droplets. If I select that icon it shows that Black and Yellow are empty and has a red X next to each of their levels. the Cyan and Magenta show about 1/4 full no red X. I have contacted HP phone support and they asked me to remove the print head and wipe the underside if there was excess ink. There was not, but I wiped it anyways. Reinstalled and still had failure. The HP rep said it would be better to buy a new HP printer. This is unacceptable as this printer worked perfectly. Always with Genuine HP ink replacement cartridges.

I suggest you contact HP Support for replacement cartridges. But if the issue persists then it would be a printer issue and the printer needs to be serviced or upgraded

Thank you
