HP 8600 Plus will not pick up photo paper

Releasing the button on the end of the tray to get it to stay released and applying tape over the button so it stayed released worked GREAT!

My HP 8600 pro plus has a single tray.
If I select tray1 instead of automatic paper feeding, the printer loads any type of paper: photo glossy, transparent adhesive, normal paper.
If I select automatic paper feed, the printer loads only plain paper.
Selecting tray 1 in print options, everything works flawlessly.

Finally a real solution! Thanks Andy, your 'cork strip build up' technique really solved the problem and makes perfect sense when you look close. After all the dumb donkey answers from Hewlett Packard I was really starting to think all of them were losing their minds. Bottom line is that they have a problem with this printer and are ignoring it. If only they had made the cork a little thicker!

I found a real solution. Overload the feed tray, ignore the "fill to here line" on the tray and loaded a bunch of regular white paper. Then on top of that add a hand full of photo paper sheets. I guess this thing needs spoon fed. I love the irony that the HP photo paper could not be used in the HP printer. Good luck all.

I bought the 8600 back in July of 2013  Worked great for 9 months on Phote paper   Now 04/17/2014 I am getting out of paper when printing Gloss Phote paper.. Spoke with HP support for 2 hours.. NO HELP... They send me a new Refurbished 8600 printed.. I had the same issue  OUT OF PAPER .. I flipped  the papre to Gloss up and it would piint on the dull side.  I them flipped the paper back and it would print ok for a couple of pages then ... I would get same msg again... I contact HP support asking for a new printer Different model... Waiting to hear back from them  04/25/2014..

I keep seeing posts re-appear about the HP 8600 Plus not properly picking up photo (or thick) paper from the paper tray.  I see that HP has refused to address the real issue and the customer generated solution has not been passed around.

The real problem is the thickness of the cork strip (or other material on some units) that is located on the rear top of the paper elevator inside the paper tray.  Remove the paper tray, remove the paper and you will see the strip at the rear of the paper tray.  I used black electrical tape in layers to build up that strip to almost twice the thickness.  There is probably other material you can use but the electrical tape worked well because it is slick on the back side and the paper slides over it with no problems.  This procedure increases the pressure of the paper onto the pick up rollers slightly.  Just that small adjustment makes all the difference.  I can't understand why HP continues to ignore this problem.

After performing this procedure, don't forget to adjust to proper parameters for photo, or thick paper when printing on such.

I spent one hr with tech support. No fix from them.

So I drove to Staples and bought HP photo paper. Now it works fine. Tech support says Kirkland (Costco) photo paper will also work.

I have been having the same problem with my HP Officejet 8600 Plus, and solved it by setting the  Document Properties "Media" to HP Brochure Paper 180G, glossy.  I have been using Kodak Glossy photo paper which is 48 lb (180 g/m sq).  The printer works well, but it is definitely inonsistent in what it WILL accept. I usually use "Thick Plain Paper" under media or this paper, as it prints a whole lot faster as it is not trying to apply the heavy density of color pixels often requested for photos.  I like the printer, but I do have to play with it it often when usng photo paper.
