Hi @sscotten747,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet 8600 is interpreting print requests as fax requests, it’s likely that there’s a configuration issue with the printer settings. This can occur due to incorrect default settings or a problem with the printer’s mode or driver. Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve this issue:
1. Check Printer Mode:
- On the printer’s control panel, look for a mode selection button or menu. Ensure that the printer is set to “Print” mode rather than “Fax” mode.
- Some models have a dedicated button to switch between modes; ensure you're not accidentally in Fax mode.
2. Verify Printer Settings
- On the printer's control panel, navigate to Setup or Settings.
- Go to Preferences or Print Settings.
- Ensure the default mode is set to “Print”.
Check Printer Defaults::
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on your HP OfficeJet 8600 and select Printer properties.
- In the General tab, ensure that it is set as the default printer.
- Check the Advanced tab to ensure the default print mode is correctly set.
3. Reinstall Printer Drivers
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click your HP OfficeJet 8600 and select Remove device or Delete.
- Open Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall any HP printer software.
- Visit the HP Support website and search for your HP OfficeJet 8600.
- Download the latest drivers and software compatible with your operating system (Windows 11, Windows 10, etc.).
- Install the drivers and follow the setup instructions.
4. Check Print Settings on Computer
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Ensure the HP OfficeJet 8600 is set as the default printer.
- Click on the printer, then Manage and Printing Preferences to ensure correct settings.
- When printing from an application (e.g., Word, PDF reader), ensure that the correct printer is selected and check the print settings for any unintended configurations.
5. Update Firmware
- Go to the HP Support website and look for firmware updates for the HP OfficeJet 8600.
- Follow the instructions to download and install the latest firmware for your printer.
6. Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 1-2 minutes and then plug it back in and turn it on.
- This can sometimes resolve configuration issues and reset any erroneous settings.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
