So I am trying to print a black and white text document, I have gone in and selected print bw and gone into advanced and changed to print black only in draft mode, and yet every time I print it gives me the error cant print cause my yellow is depleted. I need to print and do not wish to buy color ink just to print bw.
I need to print RIGHT NOW. I don't have time to wait for new color cartridges to be delivered, nor go out and buy new ones. I just want an override option.

Hi @pochiro,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

HP printers, like the HP Officejet Pro 8610, are designed to require all ink cartridges to have some ink, even if you are only printing in black and white. This design is intended to prevent damage to the printhead, which can occur if it tries to print without ink in any of the cartridges. However, there are a few steps you can try to attempt to bypass this limitation.

Potential Workarounds:

Force Grayscale Printing:

  • Make sure you have set your printer to print in grayscale:
    • Go to your print dialog box.
    • Select the printer.
    • Click on "Properties" or "Preferences."
    • Look for an option that says "Print in Grayscale" or "Black Ink Only" and ensure it's selected.

Printer Firmware:

  • Ensure your printer firmware is up to date. Sometimes newer firmware can fix issues related to ink cartridge detection.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on. Sometimes a reset can help resolve the issue.

Ink Cartridge Override:

  • Replace Ink Cartridge Temporarily: If you have an old or nearly empty color cartridge, try installing it temporarily. Sometimes the printer can be tricked into thinking it has enough ink.
  • Refill Color Cartridge: If you have a refill kit or some ink left in the depleted color cartridges, you can try refilling them just enough for the printer to recognize there is ink.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
