Accessory Document Feed error message came on without having used the accessory, and now device will not proceed with any other tasks. All diagnostic steps have been explored, no paper jam, cleaned ADF sensor, changed print cartridges... no resolution. Saw an earlier post years prior asking whether function could be bypassed, but now cannot locate that post.

Hi @Jacq37,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the Accessory Document Feed error on your HP Officejet Pro 8630 e-All-in-One Printer can be a frustrating issue, especially when it occurs without using the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder). Since you've already gone through cleaning the ADF sensor and other diagnostic steps, including checking for paper jams and replacing cartridges,

here are a few additional steps you can try:

1. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for about 1-2 minutes.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer. This reset might clear any temporary issues.

2. Check for Obstructions in ADF Path

Even if you have not used the ADF, dust or tiny pieces of debris could obstruct the sensor. Open the ADF cover and carefully inspect the area for any obstructions or misaligned parts that might trigger the error.

3. Recalibrate or Reset ADF Settings

The ADF can sometimes malfunction if its calibration is off:

  • Access your printer's control panel.
  • Go to Setup > Tools and look for a Recalibrate ADF or Restore Factory Defaults option.
  • Recalibrating the ADF might help reset any internal issues.

4. Bypass ADF Usage

To bypass ADF functions entirely (though it may not always be possible depending on firmware):

  • Attempt scanning from the flatbed glass. You can avoid using the ADF altogether by scanning or copying using the flatbed.
  • Some users have found success by disabling ADF in their printer settings or skipping prompts related to the ADF error during print/scan jobs. Unfortunately, HP doesn't provide a direct "disable ADF" option, but performing tasks through the flatbed may help.

5. Firmware Update Update the firmware on an HP printer

Sometimes, a firmware update may resolve known issues. Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date:

  • Go to HP's support website and check if any firmware updates are available for your model.
  • Follow the instructions to install any available updates.

6. Inspect ADF Sensor Cable

If you're comfortable, open the ADF cover and carefully inspect the sensor and cable connections to ensure nothing is loose or damaged. A disconnected or faulty cable can cause persistent errors.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
