HP 8710 Multifunction Ink Jet
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am using the correct cartridge, and it is an original HP cartridge. I have followed the online steps, and they didn't help. I tried using another original HP cartridge, and that didn't help either. The cartridge is model  954, the same as the one that came with the printer. I recently had the print head replaced, and the printer printed about two dozen pages after that. Then this message came up. It's ridiculous, because this is not a continuous ink system, it's a cartridge system.

Please help.

@j_webb, Welcome to HP Support Community!

I see that you're getting ink system error on the printer, let us try to isolate and resolve the issue. Follow the steps below-

Remove the ink cartridges from the printer, close the access door and check for the error message.

Also, Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

If the issue persists, we can try resetting the printer. The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link.

Hope this helps!

The problem was the cartridges. When I put in new cartridges, it solved the problem. Please ask the programmer to update the error message to "Change ink cartridges." Clear messages would really help!
