If you or anyone else needs to remove the ink cartridges, there is a way I've found....Lift the lid and inside front left is a white cog, rotate it towards you ( anticlockwise) and the ink cartridge holder can then be manually moved to the left

So here's an update - I was contacted by HP Support yesterday, and they advised me that they will be sending me a new printer next week. So that's a win I suppose, though I have purchased a replacement printer in the meanwhile. We could do with a second printer in the house ....

HP teams are working diligently to address the blue screen error affecting a limited number HP OfficeJet Pro 9020e printers. HP is recommending customers experiencing the error to contact the customer support team for assistance https://support.hp.com. HP is committed to providing its customers with the highest quality printing experience.
I just escalated your case to a moderator and soon you will be assisted by the HP Support team. Regards.
I am not an employee of HP, I am a volunteer posting here on my own time.

Thanks for your update, appreciated.
Problem is that it's basically impossible to contact HP customer support team in Germany. My case is open but the only option "phone" always fails with no one picking up.
That said returning the printer to amazon Germany was the quicker and more effective "solution".

Bob, I really hope there will be any solution soon. Already waiting for one and a half weeks now without any help from HP, it’s devastating what HP is doing to its customers - first they brick our printers, then they provide no support at all…

Hi,
Not only have they not offered any solution since 9/05, but they also do not offer any compensation or interruption for printer cartridge subscriptions and continue to collect the money!!! And yet they have all the necessary information to get in touch with the customers concerned!!!

More news coverage of this rather incredible topic:

Everyone is talking about an update that ran alone, without warning the user and that continued to install on printers when HP was already informed of the problem. At no time did HP communicate on the version of this update and did not mention the subject first during the various calls. It could also be a virus, which would explain the embarrassment of HP..
If this is the case, HP will have to communicate about the data they have lost.
In the meantime, a change in HP account passwords is necessary.

I finally called support, as I figure it's looking unlikely that HP will do the right thing. They still had me go through the standard "troubleshooting" steps, but at least ended up with a case number. I was/am concerned because they didn't say this was a known issue (I told them it clearly was), they never acknowledged it as a common problem at all.
For my fellow Australians, be aware of your Australian Consumer Protection rights as per ACCC. Being out of warranty is usually NO excuse. Please refer to the ACCC web site and I would suggest you search for "Repair, replace, refund, cancel". Do not be afraid to bring up the ACCC protections but familiarise yourself with what they are first.
Good luck everyone, this has certainly been a bad experience for our small business.
