Try doing a full reset to defaults on your machine before downgrading / upgrading the firmware.
Make sure you are successfully downgrading. On the printer go to Setup-Service-Firmware Datecode and make sure you have the correct date. Make sure you are using a PC laptop, direct connected with a USB printer cable to the printer. Trying to update over wifi can be hit or miss. Make sure you have allowed downgrading in your firmware service settings.
If this does not work, please try to update connecting to the FTP of the printer using the method posted by Rickscully.

@Rickscully.... Thanks for taking the time to provide this detail. I noticed the first link took me to the 20200419 version that appears what many people are using. I believe the 20200612 was the last version prior to this fiasco. Also, for mac user you can use the "Go" in the Finder menu to connect to your printer. I am going to try to find the 20200612 version before I transfer the file to the printer and confirm the update. Your post was extremely helpful... Thanks again!!!
@All... Has anybody else tried disabling IPv6 that are using third non HP toner. I am using genuine HP print cartridges. This was presented much earlier in this thread. My apologizes for not recognizing the author.
However, it allowed me to make this simple change and continue to use the most current firmware. I have been investigating the risk of maintaining current firmware vs. disabling IPv6. The firmware was presented to the public as being implemented to avert a security risk.
Thanks to all!

Thank you, thank you, thankyou, atdallas. I was in the middle of printing on Wednesday when the new download occurred and blocked me out of printing because I use 3rd party toner due to costs. I spent over an hour that night and then several hours yesterday until I found this post. I am ever soo grateful. This worked miracles and I am back up and running. Being a notary signing agent, I print tons of papers every day and cannot afford HP toner - one cartridge cost about 1/2 what the whole printer costs me. I have now blocked updates and will continue on my merry little way. Again, thank you for saving me dollars.

Thank you, pissedoff, your reference to reddit helped me and fixed my printing issue. It appears HP is running a monopoly on their printers/toner and needs to be addressed. I have blocked all future updates and will continue with the 06/2020 firmware. With what HP wants to charge for their toner, I would be better off buying a whole new printer each time. Soooo RIDICULOUS.
Thanks again

Hi all, I have lost around 8 hours of my life and caught various bugs on my brand new Mac trying to fix this issue. It now boils down to principle and there is no way a big company like hp is going to control and dictate what I do. If anyone has a link to the dmg Mac file then please let me know. I will owe you many beers. I have lost so much productivity this past 2 weeks for my small business, Hp are a disgrace. I will never buy off them again. I’m at the point now where this weekend I will have to skip a pretty new printer and buy a new one unless anyone can help, like I say I’ve tried everything. Thanks ross

The method I described in detail works on All operating systems. I am a Mac user and could not use the exe method even when using a windows laptop.
All you need is an FTP client. There are very good free ones like Fetch if you don’t have one.
