I recently purchased an HP Color LaserJet Pro 3201. The setup and configuration went fine; I'm trying to get the printer to default to tray 2 and ignore tray 1, as I'll never print there. The problem I'm having is when I try to airprint, it constantly complains about tray 1 being out of paper, even when I select tray 2. I then go and print, and I get a generic "airport error". I can print just fine from my MAC, but even there, I have to manually select tray 2.
I'd also love for the printer to default from the printer, black and white vs. color.

Meanwhile you may try these steps:
Ensure AirPrint Defaults to Tray 2
AirPrint often defaults to Tray 1 because of its default paper type settings. You can try these steps to override that behavior:
Check AirPrint Settings on Mac:
- When you print from a Mac, in the print dialog, ensure that Tray 2 is selected before hitting print. You may need to adjust this every time, but you can set a custom profile in your printer settings to save the tray preference.
Update Printer Drivers:
- Make sure you are using the latest version of the printer driver for your HP Color LaserJet Pro 3201. This can improve compatibility with AirPrint.
- You can update drivers by visiting HP's official support page for your printer.
Update Printer Firmware:
- Ensure that the printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes, AirPrint issues can be resolved with the latest firmware.
- To check for updates, go to HP Smart or HP Web Admin interface on a web browser (by typing the printer's IP address) and look for firmware updates under Settings > Printer Updates.

Resolving the "AirPrint Error" / "Tray 1 Empty" Issue
Restart the Printer and Router:
- If there are network issues, restarting both the printer and your Wi-Fi router can help resolve the problem. This will refresh network connections and reset any minor software glitches.
Ensure Paper is Loaded in Tray 1:
- The error message about Tray 1 being empty may appear if the printer is expecting paper in Tray 1. While you want to avoid using Tray 1, having paper in Tray 1 as a backup may resolve the error. If you want to strictly ignore Tray 1, make sure you set it as "Not Used" from the printer settings.
Disable Tray 1 in AirPrint Settings (if possible):
- Unfortunately, AirPrint doesn't offer a direct way to configure tray preferences. The workaround here is to ensure that Tray 1 is set to "Not Used" in the printer's settings and that you always manually select Tray 2 during print jobs from the Mac. Set Printer to Default to Black and White Printing
To set the default color printing preference to black and white:
Via the Printer Driver on Mac:
- Open the Printers & Scanners preferences on your Mac.
- Select your HP Color LaserJet Pro 3201, then click on Options & Supplies.
- Under Options, set Default Print Color to Black and White or Grayscale.
- You can also adjust these settings in the Print Dialog when printing but setting the default will save you from needing to change it every time.
Test and Troubleshoot Further
After completing the above steps:
Test AirPrint and Tray Selection:
- Print a document using AirPrint and check if the issue with Tray 1 persists.
Test Black and White Printing:
- Try printing a document in black and white to confirm the setting is applied.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
