HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw

This morning i've had 5 printers start a continuous reboot cycle siting Service Error 79.   4 of them are HP Color LaserJet Pro M283fdw and 1 is an HP Color LaserJet M479fdn.

After looking up the error, i've tried the following:

  • Power off the printers, waited 2 minutes, then powered back on. - Error Continues
  • Unplugged the network cable, then
    • Turned off IPv6, Power Cycled, waited a couple minutes then plugged in the ethernet cable - Error Continues
    • Turned off Wifi, Power Cycled, waited a couple minutes then plugged in the ethernet cable - Error Continues
    • Updated the firmware, plugged in the ethernet cable - Error Continue

It seems the error is related to the printers ethernet driver?   Is there a fix for this?

Any Help would be great.

Hi @GGEISERT78

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Error 79 on HP Color LaserJet printers typically indicates a firmware or network-related issue, and it sounds like you've already tried several good troubleshooting steps. Here are some additional suggestions you can try:

Check for Conflicting Print Jobs:

  • Sometimes, a corrupted print job can cause Error 79. Try clearing any print jobs in the queue on your print server or any connected computers.

Perform a Cold Reset:

  • This is more involved but can help. Turn off the printer and unplug it. Press and hold the # and 6 keys on the control panel while turning the printer back on. Keep holding the buttons until you see a cold reset message.

Check for Network Issues:

  • Since you've already tried unplugging the network cable, ensure that there are no issues with the network switch or router that might affect the printers. Consider connecting the printers directly to the router using a different port or cable.

Remove Third-Party Applications:

  • If any third-party applications are managing the printers, temporarily disable them to see if they are causing the issue.

Print Directly from a Computer:

  • Connect one of the printers directly to a computer via USB and see if it can print without error. This can help identify if the issue is network-related.

Check Firmware Again:

  • Verify that the firmware update was successful and that you're using the latest version. Sometimes, firmware updates can get interrupted or fail.

Reset Network Settings:

  • On each printer, navigate to the network settings and perform a factory reset of the network settings. This can sometimes resolve issues with the network configuration.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
