HP Deskjet 3636
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hi, I have a HP Deskjet 3636 printer which until recently was working great. Summary of my issues as follows;

Scan works fine 🙂

When I press print everthing looks like it worked but nothing actually prints out (Paper, ink etc all good)

I tried running the HP tools and it didn't print a test page. It did however print an "internal test page". The tool says it's software related so I uninstalled the software and re-installed this (twice).

Printer works from my other PC with no issues which would confirm that it's some software issue ?

Running WIN 8.164-Bit

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Andy.

@Ajay9999,

Thanks for visiting the HP community. A very good day to you!  I read the post regarding issues with printing I will be delighted to assist you here.

You’ve done an excellent job of diagnosing the issue from your end. Superb effort and spectacular research were done as well.  Kudos to you on that score.  I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂

To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did this happen after a software or Window update?
  • Is it a wireless or USB connection?

For now, try these steps:

  • Perform a hard reset on the printer from this link: https://hp.care/2IjsOT4   and follow instructions from the section “Step 1: Reset the printer

If it continues, then uninstall and reinstall the printer software at the root level by following these instructions:

  • Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
  • Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
  • Go to devices and printers, in control panel and select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
  • Click on print server properties.
  • You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there if any.
  • Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
  • Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
  • It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
  • If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
  • Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.
  • Restart the PC again.

Then download the latest full feature driver from https://hp.care/2rLsZwh and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

  • This should fix the issue. Now check for issue resolution. If it continues, please update the printer firmware also by following instructions from this link: https://hp.care/2rHKwDD

If this does not do the trick, please download the Windows Built-in drivers by following instructions from this link: https://hp.care/2o3acvH

This should resolve the issue for you. There is an associated YouTube Video on how to install the built-in drivers.

Perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Good luck to you. I will keep a watch for your response.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

I had the exact same issue when trying to get the printer working with a new desktop.

The printer worked fine with the other 2 PCs, but on the new one it would only scan.

The print and scan doctor crashed after selecting no print, every time.

I ran several procedures, includnig this one.

The only fix was using the windows drivers.

Then I installed the app HP Scan and Capture to use for the scanner.

So even though I am happy that it did work after all. I wasted a tremendous amount of time to get it working and I don't really find it acceptable that HP's driver did not work and I find it even worst that HP's diagnostic tool does not find any issues and crashes. This is a brand new Dell PC with a fresh Windows 10 installation.

Even my very old Canon Selphy CP780 worked fine after setting its installation package for compatibility with windows 7. Took me 5 minutes to install it.

HP needs, at least, to improve its diagnostic tools.

Thanks
