Hello,

I brought a brand new HP DeskJet 4120e printer yesterday and have been trying it out this morning and I am satisfied with the printing quality. However, whenever the printer is switched on but not being used the printer makes a loud "printing" noise every 4 seconds. I have nothing pending to print, put the printer on quiet mode, checked that the printer isn't jammed, I have tried reseting the printer itself, I have tried reseting the connection and removing the printer from my MacBook yet nothing has stopped the incredibly annoying/continuous loud sound.

I have tried everything to fix this problem to no success. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to isolate the issue.

Reset the printer:

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  3. Wait 60 seconds.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

Once its done update the printer firmware:

  • Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your PC.
  • Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also refer to the article: Paper Jam error Step 3 and 4. By the end of the article, you will be able to isolate the issue.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hello @Echo_Lake

Thank you for your reply. I followed your comment on updating the latest printer firmware from my PC and that seems to have done the job. Its a little disappointing that I had to first update the firmware on my brand new printer prior to it working correctly but never the less this has worked and the annoying idle noise is gone.

Thanks again for your help,
