HP Deskjet 1512 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I put in a brand new color cartridge (Genuine HP 61) and I'm getting the following error:

Ink Cartridge Failure
-- -- TriColor

Cartridges listed above are damaged or have failed

The left ink (color) indicator is flashing.

I turn off, unplugged and turned back on with same error.

Removed and reinserted cartridge and getting same error.

Cleaned contacts on cartridge, re-insert and still getting same error.

Hi @T9000,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with an "Ink Cartridge Failure" message can be frustrating, but there are several troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this issue with your HP Deskjet 1512 printer:

Verify Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that the cartridge you installed (HP 61 Tri-color) is compatible with your HP Deskjet 1512. Genuine HP cartridges typically work seamlessly, but double-checking the model compatibility is always a good first step.

Check Cartridge Installation: Make sure the cartridge is properly installed. Follow these steps:

  • Turn on the printer.
  • Open the cartridge access door. The carriage should move to the center of the printer.
  • Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.
  • Press down gently on the cartridge to release it, and then pull it out of the slot.
  • Check for any plastic tape or tabs covering the contacts or nozzles. Remove them if present.
  • Insert the cartridge back into its slot, and press down firmly until it snaps into place.
  • Close the cartridge access door.

Reset the Printer: Sometimes, resetting the printer can clear temporary issues. Here’s how you can reset the printer:

  • Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the power source.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer if it does not automatically turn on.

Clean Cartridge Contacts: Ink residue or dust on the cartridge contacts can sometimes cause communication issues. Clean the contacts gently with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water. Be careful not to touch the nozzles or electrical contacts with your fingers.

Inspect for Physical Damage: Check the cartridge for any physical damage. If you find damage, such as a bent contact or leaking ink, the cartridge may need to be replaced.

Update Printer Firmware: Sometimes, updating the printer's firmware can resolve cartridge recognition issues. Check HP's official website for any available firmware updates for your HP Deskjet 1512 printer model. Update the firmware on an HP printer

Try Another Cartridge (if available): If possible, try installing another compatible cartridge to determine if the issue is with the cartridge itself or the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
