Product: HP Deskjet 2545
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Does HP Deskjet 2545 work only with one ink cartridge or does it both for them to work, I only print black and white and dont want to buy tri color as I am not using it ? or is tricolor required for sure even to print black and white..

Yes, it's called single-cartridge mode. User manual page 43.
