Hi @BobJ24,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When encountering a "Printer is in an error state" message on your HP Deskjet 2820e, it indicates that there might be a variety of issues causing the problem. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve this issue.
- Check Printer Connections: Ensure that the printer is properly connected to your laptop via USB cable or network connection (if it's a wireless printer). Also, make sure the printer is turned on.
- Restart Printer: Turn off the printer, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary errors.
- Restart Laptop: Restart your laptop as well. This can help refresh the connection between your laptop and the printer.
- Update Printer Drivers: Outdated or corrupt printer drivers can cause communication errors between your laptop and printer. Visit the HP website to download and install the latest drivers for your Deskjet 2820e model.
- Check for Paper Jams: Open the printer's access door and check for any paper jams or obstructions. Clear any jams carefully, following the printer's instructions.
- Reset Printer: Reset the printer to its factory default settings. This can often resolve various issues. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.
- Check Ink/Toner Levels: Ensure that the printer has enough ink or toner to complete the printing job. Low ink/toner levels can sometimes trigger error messages.
- Run Printer Troubleshooter: Most operating systems have built-in printer troubleshooters that can help diagnose and fix common printer issues. Run the troubleshooter on your laptop to identify the problem.
- Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. You can usually check for firmware updates through the printer's settings menu or the HP website.
- Verify Printer Settings: Double-check the printer settings on your laptop to ensure that the correct printer is selected and that there are no print jobs stuck in the queue.
- Try a Different USB Port/Cable: If you're using a USB connection, try connecting the printer to a different USB port on your laptop. Also, try using a different USB cable to rule out cable issues.
By following these troubleshooting steps, you should be able to resolve the "Printer is in an error state" message and get your HP Deskjet 2820e printer working properly with your laptop again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
