I ran out of black ink so I replaced the cartridge with one I refilled at Costco, but the printer continued to think the ink level was low and refused to print. I watched FOUR videos on how to fix this problem and each had a different solution, but none worked. I gave up and bought a genuine HP cartridge. Now the ink level is fine, but the printer will not print PDFs. I turned it on and off, made sure all doors were closed, deleted the print job and tried again many times. No use. The computer shows an error message (cannot print). BUT, the printer will print other things, like emails.

@Unsprung, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

HP does not recommend the use of non-HP ink cartridges. It may or may not work.

Now, as you are using a HP ink cartridge and you are able to print other files than PDF, it means the ink cartridge and the printer is working fine. This seems like an app-specific issue.

Are you using a Win PC or a MAC?

Try updating the Adobe app or reinstalling it.

Also, try printing the PDF file as an image to check if that works. Refer to this document - Print PDF as an image

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
