Hi! @dmurfy, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you have issues printing in color from your printer.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Are you able to make a color copy from your printer?

Have you tried checking with a different ink cartridge?

Have you tried printing from a different application? Does the issue persist?

Try replacing low or empty ink cartridges on your printer.

Check the estimated ink levels from your Mac.

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.

  3. Depending on your operating system, click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

  4. In the Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners window, click the name of your printer, and then click Options & Supplies.

  5. Click Supply Levels.

    Estimated ink levels display.

Also, try the steps recommended below.

Use HP Utility to clean the ink cartridges from your Mac.

  1. Load plain paper into the input tray.

  2. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.

  3. Depending on your version of OS X, click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

  4. In the Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners window, select your printer, and then click Options & Supplies.

  5. Click Utility, and then click Open Printer Utility.

    HP Utility opens.

  6. Click Clean Printheads , and then click Clean.

A Print Quality Diagnostic page prints.

  7. Examine the Print Quality Diagnostic page.

    • If the print quality is acceptable, click Finish. You can stop troubleshooting.

    • If the print quality is unacceptable, click Cleaning Level 2 to continue the next level of cleaning.

I tried the above suggestions and my printer default is still returning to black and white printing only. My test pages and my head cleaning pages all who color and that my color cartridge has supply in it (even more than my black and white)
