Dell Inspiron 3847 Desktop
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 Home from Windows 7 Home. All works fine except all the print jobs to my old HP Deskjet D4260  get stuck in the print queue. The printer worked fine on Win7. I have downloaded all the drivers from the HP site for my specific model, troubleshot it over and over using the print and scan doc tool, what Microsoft site says to do, done everything the virtual assistant said to do, have restarted the pc, removed and reinstalled the printer, redownloaded the drivers over and over both with the USB cable in and with the cable out unless it said to connect, turned the printer on and off, downloaded the additional software through the scan doc, tried manually adding the printer and using the drivers Windows provided, etc. All these things say they have been done successfully but no luck. The printer's light doesn't flash when you send the print job, even though the printer is listed as ready and as the default printer. To clear the jobs I have to start and stop the print spooler. A test page won't print either, and at this point, I am wondering if the drivers on the HP page for that product are not compatible with my machine, and if I have to try some other drivers. At one point, I tried loading the PCL6 Universal driver but that didn't even find my HP 4260, so I went back to loading the HP drivers from the HP site and from the HP doc scan tool. The printer is not on a wireless network. It works fine on my Lenovo Thinkpad old laptop which is only up to Windows 10 1607. The Dell is updated through today with all Windows updates with the exception of a removal of the KB4244244 one that Microsoft pulled a few days ago. I love this printer and don't want to have to buy a new one. Any suggestions? I just want to know if this is a wasted effort, and if there are no ways to make this old printer work on Windows 10. Then I can move forward and just buy a new printer, which I don't want to do if I don't have to, but I will if there is no fix. Thank you

I have gone through your Post and I understand your concerns

I suggest you uninstall the printer driver from root level and download the Full Feature Software

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Restart the computer and download the Full Feature Software from Here and follow the onscreen Instructions

Keep me posted how it goes

Krazy Toad,

i am so appreciative that you took the time to respond, and I want to make sure I do this right and in the correct order, if that matters. When I go to your first steps and open the Programs and Features, I don't see the actual printer per say. I see only these six HP files which were all installed on 2/18/20 when I was trying to get the printer to work: HP Customer Participation Program 14.0, HP Photo Creations, HP Printer Software Drivers, HP Imaging Device Functions, HP Update, HP Solutions Center 14.0. I have the option to uninstall any of these, but you gave instructions for removing the printer drivers in Steps 6-10, so I am not sure if I should remove all of these and still proceed through the list as you instructed, or if you would need to modify the steps then? If I remove all these files, will that remove the printer driver that you are trying to remove in steps 6-10, and would I still need to do those steps 6-10 as you have listed anymore, or is the Printer Driver Software listed here under the Programs to uninstall different than what you are saying to remove and do in Steps 6-10? FYI, Steps 4-5 do show my printer with the remove device option there without me having to right click, and Steps 7-10 right now show in the Print Server Properties Driver menu HP Deskjet 4200 Series and HP Universal Printing PL6 from when I tried to install that. They are there now, because I didn't remove anything yet, but I just wanted to let you know how all is configured here, so you can tell me what to do first/next now and if your instructions need to be modified. Thanks so much

Yes, remove all the softwares related to printer and reinstall the printer full feature driver.

I hope that helps.

Cheers.

Well, I did all this and the install failed at the very end during the configuring product process after the software installation complete was checked off. It said fatal error, then gathered an error report log which I screenshot the details page of ( part said application did not return ERROR_SUCCESS, returned error 1223). I clicked continue to send this error info to HP and then it said on the details screen "HP Install Error- Windows 8" (which is weird because I have never had Windows 8 on this pc). The it said a solution has been found to this particular problem and it gave me a screen that said it had loaded HP Installation Error- Windows 8 on my desktop and to click continue to proceed with installation recovery and then after the recovery was complete, to open the troubleshooter. I then had to  restart the computer to finish the uninstall process. When my pc restarted, it didn't automatically open anything, so I opened the HP Scan Doctor app and ran that, and it found my printer and said there were no problems with it, and then it printed a test page, which it wouldn't do before when I ran this troubleshooter. It now appears to be working!  The odd thing is that when I go to printers and scanners, it does not list my HP there, which is what happened when I first tried to install all the drivers from the same link you gave me, and I had to add it manually. But now, the printer works fine without even being listed. However, all the same files that were there before that I deleted before running this new install are there under programs and features and in the printer server properties driver list. At this point, since it is working, I don't want to mess with anything, but I wanted you to know what happened in case anything goes wrong later and for others that may have the same issue. Thank you so much!!

This might require remote access of the computer to fix this issue.

I request you to talk to HP support.

They might have multiple options to help you with this.

  1. Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true
  2. Select the country.
  3. Enter the serial of your device.
  4. Select the country from the drop-down.
  5. Click on "Show Options".
  6. Fill the web-form. A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

I hope that helps.

To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.

Cheers.

I clicked accepted solution as you requested, but I do not need to open a new case with HP support, because the printer is working, so I certainly don't want to mess with it again now. Thanks.
