Update to my problem.... I returned the printer to the shop today and they replaced it.  The new printer makes the same noise, whether it's on, in sleep mode or turned off.

I have the same high pitched hum.  It is related to the sleep mode when power consumption is lowest.  It goes away when you press the touchscreen and power comsumption increases as the screen comes out of sleep and turns "on".

The usual places sound comes from in electronic circuits is inductors and ceramic capacitors.  The cross product of current and magnetic field is a force. Forces always work on two things, which in the case of a inductor are the core and individual segments of wire that make up the windings. At the right frequency, this can make the winding vibrate a bit, which we hear as sound.

I'll bet there is no fix possible from HP except to redesign the printed circuit board!

HP product engineering - thoughts?

Appears that the noise is commom problem with this printer.  I am having the same problem.  My HP printer sounds like a very distant fax machine / dial-up high pitched whine when in stand-by mode.  I know it is the printer; as hitting the power butten to wake up the printer makes it go away.  It sounds like most people who have returned the printer have had a similar problem with the replacement printer.  I had an office Jetpro 8500 for years with no problem so I am reluctent to switch to a diffent brand.  Has a solution to this problem been identified and corrected before I take the steps to return the printer.

Current solution is to turn off the printer but that really seems like a silly thing to have to do with a wireless printer so universally connected otherwise!

I also have this noise. From the above posts, it is very clear that this is a design flaw in the printer. Which explains why Best Buy was so anxious to unload it at almost half price.

I have the same high pitched noise coming from my HP ENVY 7640 when it is in sleep mode. It goes away when I touch the screen or turn it off.

I already had to get a replacement for this printer (the first one had a scan feeder issue).

I would not recommend this printer.
