HP ENVY Pro 6400 - Printer status unknown

macOS 10.13 High Sierra

I have printed 4 pages of a 22 page pdf document (in random order). With the 5th page I tried to print, it shows printer status unknown. I tried disconnecting the power cord while the printer was still on and them disconnecting it from the power source. I waited a few minutes, reconnected and still have the same message. The printer is connected to my iMac.

Any suggestions?

To assist you better,

  • Have you tried printing different types of documents like Word, Emails or Webpages and check if the issue persists?

Are you using the HP Smart app to print from your Mac?

If yes, then update the app using App Store to version 12.7.1 and try printing.

 

Perform a ping test to check the connectivity

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the Wireless icon on the printer
  2. On the MAC Go to Spotlight > search for Network utility > select Ping tab > enter the IP address of the printer in the box
  3. Check the second box that says Send only > 10 pings
  4. Click on ping > Check the results at the end if any packets are lost
  5. Note: There should be 0% packet loss, share the results in your next post.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your Mac.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

 

Also, check for any software updates on Mac

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

 

You may try printing the PDF files using the preview app and check if that helps
