I am trying to copy a document on my HP Envy 4511 printer.  The copy prints with vertical bars about 1 inch thick on the right side of the page.  I have tried cleaning cartridges, and clean page smears. I did a print quality diagnostic test which looks perfectly fine (with no vertical lines). I then tried to align printer.  the alignment  page printed without any vertical lines.  When I insert the alignment page and try to continue with alignment it says "alignment problem the alignment page was not detected. Touch OK to continue" and then I get an Alignment Unsuccessful message.  What is going on and how do I fix my printer so that it will copy properly?

@ppaven, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

The issue seems to be with the Scanner mechanism in the printer. Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Clean the scanner glass with a lint-free cloth.

Check the scanner bar functionality

Perform a visual test of the scanner mechanism to see if it is jammed.

  1. Remove any original documents or photos from the scanner glass.
  2. Lift the scanner lid slightly, and then press the Copy button or icon.

If the scanner light does not move or moves halfway or is not lit, the scanner mechanism is likely jammed/broken.

Let me know how this goes.

I apologize, I have been out of town.  I have followed the steps you outlined.  I have the latest firmware,  The scanner bar is moving along the complete length of the scanning area.  The entire scanner bar is lit.  I did note something that may be helpful.  The vertical lines I get along the side of the page seem to coincide with where the ribbon cable attached to the scanner bar travels along the document on that side.  It seems to be "popping up" and running along the glass as the scanner bar moves. I am guessing that I am then getting a "copy / scan" of the reflection of this ribbon tape from underneath the glass.  Is there some way to access this part of the printer and see if it has come lose from something?

Appreciate you trying the steps. I'd suggest you Contact HP in your region regarding the service options for your printer.
