Oh boy! I spoke a hair too soon. Tried to print a few minutes ago and back to square one. The printer was seeing two devices. I have one. It wasn’t printing. Reset printer again and it works. I’m not sure but I think the phone keeps morphing so the printer sees it as new, the phone sees the printer as wrong, etc. had to clear printer memory and old printer from phone “(hit forget printer in WiFi settings on phone ) there isn’t stable recognition. But if you really need to print, this workaround does work. I printed my document again today. A pox on hp and Apple.

Additional, but perhaps related, solution from Apple forums........
- in your iOS device, go to settings/Wi-fi
- Click in the “i” next to your network
- choose “forget network”
- reconnect to network
- printing is reported as then working ok
