Hi HP community,
I am the owner since quite a few years now of an HP Envy 5010 printer with which I have been very happy so far.
Recently, I went on vacation and when coming back I noticed it remains stuck in Initialisation phase.
Removing the power cable, waiting some time, removing and pressing the power button and so on did not trigger any change of status.
I am sure that this is a software issue / bug and for that I am looking for the Hardware Reset procedure.
Can you please help me out with the steps required to get it to unblock and reset ?
Thank you!
Remains stuck like this forever (there are other threads for similar printers with the same problem here, this is why I ask for the hardware reset procedure; I also work in IT and am quite tech savvy albeit mostly with Linux and reverse engineering code)

or if this is the older problem with some HP printers that the soldering on the motherboard becomes flaky and needs reflowing the board
I can't believe I am the first one to hit this issue with the envy 5010 🙂 anyone else ?:)

Hi @mihaime,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your frustration with your HP Envy 5010 printer being stuck in the initialization phase. Before proceeding with a hardware reset, you might want to try a few troubleshooting steps to see if the issue can be resolved without performing a reset. Here are some steps you can try:
- Check Power Connection: Ensure that the power cable is securely plugged into the printer and the power outlet. Try plugging it into a different outlet to see if that resolves the issue.
- Check for Paper Jams: Sometimes, paper jams can prevent the printer from initializing properly. Open the printer cover and check for any paper jams or obstructions in the paper path.
- Inspect Ink Cartridges: Make sure that the ink cartridges are properly installed and are not empty. If any of the cartridges are empty, replace them with new ones.
- Reset Printer Software: If possible, try resetting the printer software from the control panel menu. Look for a reset option in the printer settings or refer to the printer's user manual for instructions.
- Update Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve software-related issues.
- If none of the above steps work and you still want to perform a hardware reset, here are the general steps for performing a hardware reset on HP printers:
- Turn off the Printer: Make sure the printer is turned off and unplugged from the power source.
- Wait for a Few Minutes: Allow the printer to sit unplugged for at least 5-10 minutes to discharge any residual power.
- Press and Hold Power Button: Press and hold the power button on the printer for about 30 seconds. This helps to drain any remaining power from the printer's internal components.
- Plug in the Power Cable: After waiting for a few minutes, plug the power cable back into the printer and then plug it into the power source.
- Turn on the Printer: Press the power button to turn on the printer and see if it initializes properly.
