Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

One day my black ink stopped printing, both printing from the computer or copying directly from scanner.  The color still prints.  I put a new cartridge in, nothing.  The ink levels are all good.  I've followed the tips on the support page.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software.  I've disconnected and reconnected the power to the printer.  I've run the printer diagnostic and it says it's all good.  Please help!

@mjham30,

Thank you for posting your query on HP Support Community,

Let's try these steps here:

Let's run HP Print and Scan Doctor -

Click on this link to download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor

If the issue persists, Let's uninstall the printer from the root level and then reinstall it.

  • Press “Windows key” + “r” to get the “Run” window.
  • Type "services.msc" to get Services – Go to “Print spooler” – Right-click and “Stop” the service.
  • Now again open "Run" - Type “spool” and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.
  • Go to services again - Start the print spooler.
  • Now check for issue resolution.
  • If the issue persists, also try clean installing the printer drivers. Here are the steps:
  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Envy printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Please click here  to download and install the full feature software for this printer.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Alternatively, I would suggest here is to update the printer firmware - If your printer connected wirelessly, make sure to temporary connect the device with USB and then follow the link to check for the latest firmware update if available for your printer, using this website.  You might need a Windows PC to run the firmware. For more details, please use this link: HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Once done, restart the printer.

Let me know how it goes!

Jeet, it did not help.  After I did the first 4 steps, I printed one page.  It printed in black ink but there was some slight smearing.  After that, it went back to not printing black at all.  I did the rest of the steps and it's still not printing black.

I see that you were interacting with @Jeet_singh but he is out of the office at the moment.

Please try step# 10 to 13 from this document.

Keep me posted.

I had the same issue - black ink ran out, installed a new cartridge and nothing. I did everything from uninstalling/reinstalling everything HP, clearing the print spooler, draining power, cleaning heads (from printer tools), rebooting computer and printer numerous times. I was ready to go buy a new ink cartridge tomorrow but in desperation I took a wet Q-tip and ran it right down where the ink comes out on the new cartridge (right where they say don't do that in the instructions) and instantly the ink starting coming out. I dried it off and the black is printing perfectly now. Who would have guessed? Good luck to all of you that made your way to this forum. My suspicion is that some adhesive from the protective cover got stuck to the place where the ink comes out but that is just a guess. 🙂
