I recently reinstalled my OS and drivers for my equipment including my printer. The latest software was the EN5540_Full_WebPack_1119.exe file off the HP website published in April of 2017.
When I installed the software, my printer lost its ability to automatically duplex in printing preferences. Plus when I try to change printer settings, whether through the control panel or through the document or browser, it will often crash with the error:
Now I am stuck with a printer that works fine if I want to print in black and white at best quality (seems to be stuck on that) but no color or duplexing. I can also scan just fine.
Any fix to this or am I buying a Canon or Brother for my next printer?

As I understand, your printer would not perform automatic duplexing and
No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:
When was the last time it was working fine?
Did you make any hardware/software changes?
Step 1: Run print and scan doctor:
Download and Run HP Print and Scan Doctor: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe
Step 2: Let's try these steps to uninstall and reinstall printer drivers:
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Envy printer entries and uninstall them.
- Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
- Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
- Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
- Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
To reinstall, Click here.
Let me know how that pans out
I hope you have a good day ahead,

Hi Flower_Bud,
I've let the issue go for awhile as I haven't had to print anything in a long while.
The printer worked just fine when I reinstalled the OS in January of 2017 using the latest HP driver at the time. I downloaded and installed new drivers in August of 2017, the 32-bit driver that is currently available on the HP Envy 5540 support page. That is when the problems started.
I have uninstalled the printer through the control panel and also uninstalled the software through Add/Remove programs. The funny thing is the software on the HP page says the driver is full-featured, but the software description in the control panel says it is just the basic HP 5540 driver.
