My printer won't print. The error says "load paper" but it's loaded. Also making a weird cranking sound. What gives?

@RealtorMallori, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If your HP ENVY 5540 printer is displaying a "load paper" error message despite having paper loaded, and is also making a weird cranking sound, follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Check Paper Loaded Correctly:

  • Ensure the paper is properly loaded in the input tray.
  • Adjust the paper width guides so that they hold the paper firmly in place without being too tight.

Remove and Reload Paper:

  • Remove the paper from the input tray.
  • Fan the paper stack to ensure the sheets are not sticking together.
  • Reload the paper into the tray, ensuring it is aligned and the guides are correctly positioned.

Check for Jam or Obstruction:

  • Check inside the printer for any paper jam or other obstructions.
  • Open the top cover and look carefully; if you see any crumpled paper, remove it gently.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for a minute before plugging it back in and turning it on.

Inspect the Paper Path:

  • Check if the paper paths are clear and free from debris.
  • Inspect rollers for any visible damage or obstruction.

Performing a Clean Roller Action:

  • Sometimes, cleaning the rollers can help. Refer to your printer's user guide for detailed instructions on cleaning the rollers.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
