HP ENVY 5640
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

          Hi all HP users

I am reaching out for support with my HP ENVY 5640 printer about 2 years old

as its driving me crazy with the strangest fault I have ever come across with printers

This one is a real mystery ?   So here goes !

I have the printer plugged in downstairs to a PC via usb all works fine. ( windows 10 version 1803  )

However I have recently purchased a new PC this week it is upgraded to Windows 10 version 1809 ( oct new release )

Its upstairs in my study so its connected wirelessly and works on the internet perfectly.

The Printer I am afraid is another story  driver software installed for wireless ok ( latest driver from HP

( en 5640  40.11.1135 )

Despite the printer being recognised ok set as default it just refuses to print anything

the print job strangely does not even move into the print queue just nothing  happens ??!!

Have tried the following over the last few days and am ready to throw the printer into the bin !

reinstalled and removed  printer several times

ran HP PRINT DOCTOR ( all says good no issues found )

deleted printer from network and re installed to router ( all says good )

rebooted router

ON all occaisions all appears well printer is good to go but no print job ever prints as nothing  moves to the print queue despite the print queue software running ( minus any job inside it )

So whats going on here could it be the new version of windows at fault here ( 1809 ) not compatible with the current driver ?

I am at a complete loss of what to try next ?

and am open to suggestons from any experts out there ?

thanks in advance

regards

Steve

@unhappy-chappy,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are unable to print from your new computer.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

Awesome job on diagnosing the issue correctly and performing smart troubleshooting before posting your question on HP forums. Kudos to you on that score.

I recommend you follow the below steps and check whether the issue is resolved.

1.With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

2.Remove USB cable, if present.

3.Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

4.Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

5.Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

If you continue facing the issue, I recommend you root uninstall the printer and then reinstall it and check.

Here is how it is done.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’

6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Restart the PC

14.) Download and install the printer software from the below link.

Hi

Thanks for the reply and detailed instructions.

Alas neither of these solutions worked :Crying:

Can we confirm that Windows 10 version 1809 is compatible with this printer?

The clue perhaps with the problem I believe lies in the fact that a print job never enters the print queue in the first place so the issue is driver / software related ?

I wil check the spooler in services and see if its ok and report back.

thanks once again

Any other suggestions or advice appreciated

Thanks for all the suggestions

alas nothing worked when running wirelessly the print job never enters the print queue

However if I move my printer upstairs and connect via usb all works perfectly.

Further to strengthen the wireless driver for w10 ( 1809 ) for this model as the problem I purchased a Canon ( sorry ) wireless printer and all worked perfectly for both PCs on both usb & wireless.

So I conclude this model HP Envy 5640 has a problem with wifi using W10 ( 1809 ) and as more people install it going forward more people will have the same issue as me.

HP it needs a driver update !

@unhappy-chappy,

It looks like you were interacting with @The_Fossette, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out.

I'm Raj1788 & I'm at your service.

I suggest you Connect the printer Using the USB cable and then use the below link for Changing from a USB to a Wireless Connection

Click on this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-envy-5640-e-all-in-one-printer-series/6583033/document/c0341... and follow the instructions.

Then, Assign Manual IP to the printer:

1) Print a Network configuration page from the printer's control panel.

2) Look for IP address from the Network configuration page.

3) Open web browser - Chrome or IE or any other browser that you are using.

4) Type the IP address mentioned on Network configuration page into the browser's address bar or URL bar and press enter button.

5) Go to the Network tab.

6) Click on Networking from the left pane.

7) Then click on Network Address (IP).

😎 Click on Manual IP Address and go to suggest a Manual IP.

9) Scroll down the screen and select Manual DNS server.

10) Enter the Primary and secondary DNS server from the Network Configuration page into the Manual Preferred DNS server field.

11) Click on Apply.

Refer to the video link for step by step instructions - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCnYyq80V9g

Note: The video is for win 8 but steps are similar for other operating systems as well. You need to enter the IP address in the browser's URL or the address bar to access the printer page.

Try to print.

Keep me posted, how it goes!

If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the Accepted Solution and Kudos buttons, that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Have a great day!

Cheers:)
