Solved - for me.

I was able to overcome the error by having only one or two sheets of paper in the tray.   Would it work with 10 or 20?   I don't know.

Maybe humidity is making the sheets stick together? 

 

This printer is effectively brand new.   

It always made noise as if it was trying to pull in a sheet of paper.  So I thought, "there's no way this printer could be not working".

So I plugged it in, inserted a single sheet of paper, and it printed.

 

Keeping it for now.
