I have owned HP ENVY 7800 since June 2019 and had been a subscriber of Instant Ink up until 4-17-2024. I cancelled the subscription and began purchasing ink directly from HP.com - the HP ENVY hasn’t been the most reliable printer I’ve ever owned and at this point, it will print copies for me, but it WILL NOT EVERRRRRR print any photos for me anymore. Not 4x6, not 5x7, not 8x10 sizes. 80-90% of my printing is just photographs!! So, I’m genuinely verrrrry frustrated & disappointed by now.

If I allow myself to think like a paranoid freak, I would wonder if I’m being “punished” for cancelling my Instant Ink subscription 5 months ago, but I refuse to “go there”…however,  the printer has been saying that I HAVE TO USE HP PHOTO PAPER!! It has tried to coerce me to use HP photo paper for the past 5 years, but I’ve always been able to print on Kodak, Epson annnnnd HP photo paper. So, my question is: In your personal experience & in your opinion, shall I cut my losses now and say “Bah-Bye!” to HP altogether and search for a better printer made by a more reliable brand?

Welcome to the HP English Community --

You must, of course, do what you think best.  We do not judge which products people use.

We support HP products -- there are Communities for other printer makers, too.

If you are referring to a message similar to "HP Color-Loc Paper", the words are an advertisement to remind you that the printer likes HP paper.  The printer will (should) use any high-quality photo paper in an appropriate paper size and print surface (glossy).

The printer is not aware of whether it is subscribed to an ink service.

The printer is not more sensitive to paper brands because it was subscribed to an ink service.

Subscription ink is packaged for the service, the ink formula is not strange or different from regular HP ink.

OK...

There are a couple of places where paper size and type must be in agreement:

  • Printer - using Printer Control Panel or the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  • Print Job Settings -- the exact setups vary by app or software; the goal is the same.

Likely you have seen the rest of this before -- consider the following review and "Just in Case".

Start

Make sure the printer is ready to do its best work.

The document includes cleaning instructions and how to reset the printer (Step 4) --

The Reset can clear odd issues that suddenly crop up and do not respond to the usual solutions.
