Error message says HP recommends using its own photo paper & won't print any other. I used to use other paper & HP rep said there is a fix to change this recommendation so I can use other paper but didn't know what it was. Do any of you know? Sure would appreciate knowing.....

Try / Consider
The Photo Tray supports limited paper sizes (see EWS example later in this message).
According to the specifications, HP Photo Paper -- at least those sizes used in the photo tray -- is supported to 300 gsm.
If you have trouble with heavier photo paper in the main tray, try using HP Advanced (or equivalent) -- "Advanced" photo paper line is 250 gsm.
The lighter weight paper might work better in the main tray if the heavier (300 gsm) paper balks or jams in that tray.
Media Weights Supported, By Paper Path (metric) | Tray 1: A4: 75 to 90 g/m²; HP envelopes: 75 to 90 g/m²; HP Photo Paper: up to 300 g/m²; HP 10 x 15 cm photo paper: up to 300 g/m² |
-----------------------
Notes – Paper Types
Photo Paper might be supported to 250 gsm, or, if specified, to 280 or 300 gsm.
Supported photo paper types vary – Photo paper types, sizes, and weights are printer model dependent.
For example, HP Advanced Photo paper is 250 gsm.
Do not select Photo paper if you are actually using a different paper type.
Do not attempt to use 300 gsm photo paper in a printer that does not support paper in that weight class.
Index card paper is an ISO paper type.
On a printer that supports “card paper”, HP Card paper -- unless otherwise specified -- is defined as Card / Index paper and is generally supported to 200 gsm.
If “card” paper is not listed in the Specifications, paper in this weight class might NOT be supported.
HP Brochure and HP Professional paper are typically the same weight. Brochure paper comes in two print surfaces: Matte and Glossy. HP Brochure / Professional papers are 180 gsm in weight.
HP Presentation Paper is a lighter weight “brochure” type paper at 120 gsm.
If the “heavy” paper type is generally supported but is not listed in the job configuration Properties, select the closer alternative: For example, in Properties > select “Brochure” / “Professional”.
Plain Paper is typically defined as standard office paper at 16-24 lb in weight.

Original Content
Sounds odd -- the printer is manufactured to use / prefer HP photo paper but should generally accept and print on many high-quality non-HP photo papers.
(Re)Check what the printer believes is loaded in the printer tray
Tray and Paper does not designate a "brand" of paper.
That said, it is important that Photo Paper is selected when that is what will be used in the job configuration.
Tray selection is important.
The photo tray only supports limited paper sizes - Select the size that matches the paper used for the current job configuration.
EWS > HP Document / How-to
Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)
EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management
Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper (Management)
Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type
Model Dependent: Advanced section
Click Apply to save changes
Tray and Paper – Paper Size / Paper Type / Paper Weight
Reminder
HP Smart Mobile requires that paper size / type is adjusted before the content is opened to be printed.
Paper Size, Type, and Weight loaded in the printer tray must be supported for use in that tray.
EWS provides access and control to check / adjust Tray and Paper Settings.
Note
Depending on the printer model, the Printer Control Panel might provide access to Paper Size / Type settings immediately after the paper is (re)loaded into the appropriate printer intake tray.

What else?
The application / software you are using can select the paper type --
Reminder
Media type lists in apps / software do not exactly match those in EWS Tray and Paper --
Do not look for a one-to-one correlation.

For example,
Depending on your printer, the Media type list might include more than one choice:
HP Photo Papers
and
Other Photo Inkjet Papers
