I haven`t been able to connect my printer to the Instant Ink system for a while and now it has refused to print.
The message is `HP Instant Ink Status. Cannot print. Connect printer to update HP Instant Ink status.`
I select `Connect` and the message is `Updating the printer` but it never does. I have tried reconnecting using the e-mail, the email status is connected and HP ePrint is On. I select Print and the message is 'Downloading from Internet . . . ' but then it fails with the message, 'Cannot print. Connect print to update HP Instant Ink status.'
Please advise

Dvortex,
I phoned the support services. It took a bit of time but they managed to get me reconnected. Just so you know, they tried to reset the IP connection to IPv4 (preferred 8.8.8.8 alternative 8.8.4.4) as you advised but they couldn't do it on the Microsoft Edge as I tried, however they managed to do it on Google Chrome (Using the Wireless menu rather than General). They also set up a new port for the printer (Standard TCP/IP Printer Port) using my printer's IP address.
Thanks for your help, I think my case was a tricky one ; )

Hello, @FrankTonge – Hope you are well 🙂
Welcome to the HP Forum! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips!
I understand that you are facing issues while connecting the printer to the web services. Is the printer connected to the network? If unsure, restart the printer and follow the steps below:
-
Turn on the printer, if it is not already turned on.
-
On the printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon
.
The Wireless Summary screen displays.
-
Touch the Settings icon
, and then touch Wireless Setup Wizard.
A list of wireless networks displays.
-
Touch the name of your wireless network.
If the list does not contain your network name, scroll down, then touch Enter New Network Name to type it in manually.
-
If prompted, type the WEP or WPA key using the on-screen keyboard. Make sure you type the uppercase (capital) and lowercase (small) letters exactly. Otherwise, the wireless connection fails.
-
Touch Done, and then touch OK.
If the printer is already connected to the network, then try to assign a public DNS to the printer. Here are the steps:
- Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to get the IP address.
- Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
- Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
- Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
- Click on the radio button which says, “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
- Click on radio button which says, “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)
- Restart the printer and then router once done.
Let me know if that helps!
Good luck 🙂

Hello, @FrankTonge
Restart the printer and check.
If the issue persists, try performing a network power drain to fix this issue. To perform a power drain follow the steps below:
- Turn off all the devices connected to your network including the PC, Smartphones, printer, modem (if present) and router. Make sure all the devices in the network are turned off / unplugged.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes.
- Now turn on the modem if present. Wait till all the lights are steady and idle.
- Then turn on the router. Again, wait for a couple of minutes so that the lights are all steady.
- Then turn on the printer and other devices.
If the issue persists, try to update the printer firmware here: HP ENVY 5546 All-in-One Printer
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Cheers 🙂

I tried the power drain (twice) with no luck. I also tried to update the firmware of the printer but the printer update software said the printer firmware was up-to-date and did not allow me to reinstall. I also tried the Utility-Diagnostic Tool but it didn't detect any fault apart from the fact I cannot print any test pages. Any more ideas?
