Hello,

I would like to know:

1) where can I get a Firmware upgrade for my HP LaserJet 1320 Printer that I own a long time.

2) I would also like to know if the printer Driver supports LPR protocol?

Hi @AviLandm

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

1) Firmware Upgrade for HP LaserJet 1320 Printer

HP has discontinued direct firmware updates for older models like the HP LaserJet 1320. However, you can still try a couple of options to ensure that your printer is running the latest available firmware:

Steps to Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Official HP Support: Visit the official HP support website, and search for your printer model (HP LaserJet 1320). You can try checking under the Drivers & Downloads section to see if there are any firmware updates available.
    • HP LaserJet 1320 Support Page
    • Enter your printer model and check for Firmware under the "Software, Drivers, and Firmware" tab.

Alternative Steps:

If no updates are listed, it’s possible that HP no longer provides firmware updates for this printer since it's an older model. In that case, your printer’s firmware would remain as is.

Use the Printer's Built-In Tools: Some older HP printers (including LaserJet models) have a built-in method of checking and updating firmware directly via the printer’s EIO (Enhanced I/O) slot, but this is more common for network printers or printers with specific upgradeable components.

If you don't find anything on the website, it's likely there are no firmware updates available for the LaserJet 1320.

2) Does the HP LaserJet 1320 Driver Support LPR Protocol?

The LPR (Line Printer Remote) protocol is a standard for printing over a network. The HP LaserJet 1320 is capable of supporting LPR printing, especially when connected to a network or shared via a computer, but this depends on the driver and configuration.

Steps to Enable LPR Protocol with HP LaserJet 1320:

For Windows (using the HP Universal Print Driver):

  • The HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) generally supports multiple protocols, including LPR. To use the LPR protocol, you will need to install the HP Universal Print Driver and configure the print queue for LPR printing.
  • Download the HP Universal Print Driver here:
    HP Universal Print Driver

Configure LPR on Windows:

  1. Open Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click on your HP LaserJet 1320 and choose Printer Properties.
  3. Under the Ports tab, click Add Port.
  4. Select LPR Port from the list and click New Port.
  5. Enter the IP address of the printer or the print server and give it a name (e.g., LPR_Printer).
  6. Click OK and ensure the printer is set to use the LPR port.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello Rachel571,

I am very thankful and  deeply impressed with your detailed reply to my problem,.

I have started to follow your instructions to install the UPD and I came across an issue:

there are 2 UPD files

1) upd-pcl6-x64-7.2.0.25780.exe

2) upd-ps-x64-7.2.0.25780.exe

Which of those 2 should I install? the one with PCL6 (1) or the one with PS (2)?

Looking forward for your essential reply.

Hello again Rachel571

I may have not mentioned that I am trying to use with my HP LaserJet 1320 USB printer a WaveLink WL-NU72P11 print server and I am trying to connect my USB LaserJet 1320 printer to it so that I can use it over network.

I have a few issues that prevent me from making it work. I am installing the WaveLink Network Printer Wizard and it manages to detect the printer when I connect it to the WaveLink Adapter and adds a new printer to printers list.

The problem is that it does NOT print the page despite the fact that I see the print command on the printer's queue and it reports completion and deletes it from the queue.

When I followed your instructions to add a port to the printer properties therewas no LPR Port option. What do I do?

Needing badly your assistance...:-)

Hello Rachel571,

Thank you for your reply.

I just officially  registered my HP LaserJet 1320 printer in HP's customer support service SP - Universal Print Drinter Driver Screen.jpgSP - WaveLink Network Instalation Wizard Screen.jpgso that may help you better.

You still did not answer my question in my previous reply about the 2 HPD drivers. Which one should I install?

Would it be possible to try and work it out online with you or with one of the other tech. support  person?

As I wrote to you, while following your instructions, I encountered junctions in which I did not know where to turn and what option to choose. It will help me a great deal if you could arrange for such a short online session to happen.

Would it be possible?

Avi Landman
