LaserJet Pro M254dw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Printer was working fine until I hit the update firmware on the little M254dw printer display. It has updated to FW date code 20201021and now just displays Supply problem and refuses to function. Where do I find the previous firmware and how can I wind it back?

I think the new firmware is rejecting my 3rd party toner cartridges - having worked for years with them. Very annoying - please take note HP.

Thanks yes I did find a solution to downgrade my firmware and then it all worked fine again with 3rd party toner cartridges.

The following link had the exe which downgraded the printer plus a video...

https://www.ghost-white-toner.com/firmware-update-warning/

I connected my printer via USB and switched off my WiFi whilst doing the downgrade. I have since disabled firmware upgrades.

That cost me 2.5hours of pfaffing around and thinking I have no printer for the next week or two.

hp m254dw supply problem is caused by hp firmware bricking your printer.   It will now only work with HP cartridges.   Your printer will be bricked even if the third party cartridges still have toner.   Total HP.

Dynamic security enabled printer. This Firmware includes dynamic security measures, which may prevent supplies with non-HP chips or circuitry from working now or in the future. More at: www.hp.com/go/learnaboutsupplies.

To use your printer with a 3rd party supply you will need to downgrade the latest firmware to the previous one.
I know how to do it, but HP probably wont be happy to tell you how. If you are tech savvy un google around a bit you can find the solution.

Hi,

I have the same problem : "supply issue" and 3rd party cartridges. The software update caused the issue with 3rd party cartridges. I have a M281cdw color laserjet pro printer. I tried the firmware in your post for my printer and it did not work I got the smiley face at completion but no effect, cycled the power after etc. Still at the same spot with my printer not working and showing the "Supply problem." on the screen.

Here is what I did before applying the firmware (firmware in the post did not fix my issue)

Left of the main screen press the home button

scroll all the way to the right and press the "setup" icon

(just to be sure)

      scroll down to supply settings

press cartage policy and set to off

press cartridge protection and set to off

press the back arrow to the left of the main screen

(Change settings to not automatically get updates, change this later if HP fixes this issue with a later release)

scroll down to "Service" and press

scroll and press "laser Jet Update"

                  press "Manage Updates"

                        press "Allow Updates"

                              press "No"

                       press "Check Automatically"

                             press "Off"

                       press "Allow Downgrade"

                            press "Yes"

Then I tried the firmware update and it completed successfully but did not solve the issue.

Please let me know if there is something missing on my part or if there is another firmware available.

Thanks!

Remove the cartridges. Leave the printer empty and be sure to downgrade the printer using usb connection. Sometimes that helps

Hi Svilich, I assume you downloaded the M280-M281 firmware and not one of the other firmware options. Otherwise I would double check what firmware datecode is installed now. I did see another toner cartidge seller website which had posted some HP downgrade software including one for M281 but I haven't tried that. The website is here...

good luck.
