Hi @sailgunner
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP LaserJet MFP M140w has encountered an issue and is stuck in a state where it’s not responding properly. The exclamation point and the three dots icon typically indicate a problem with the printer that it’s unable to resolve on its own. Let’s go through some troubleshooting steps to help get it back up and running:
1. Power Cycle the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds to ensure any residual power is discharged.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Check if the exclamation point and three dots symbol disappear. Sometimes, a power cycle clears minor issues.
2. Check for Paper Jams
- Open all accessible doors (like the front and rear panels) and carefully check for any paper jams or obstructions.
- Even small bits of paper can cause the printer to stop functioning.
- If you find any jammed paper, carefully remove it without tearing it.
3. Check for Ink or Toner Issues
- Ensure that the toner cartridge is properly installed and not empty.
- Remove and reinstall the toner cartridge to ensure it's seated correctly.
- If the toner is low or empty, replace it with a new one.
4. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults
- If power cycling and checking for jams don’t help, you might want to reset the printer to its factory defaults. This may help clear any configuration issues.
- On the printer's control panel, navigate to the Settings menu.
- Look for an option to Restore Defaults or Reset the Printer.
- Keep in mind that this will erase any network settings (Wi-Fi or Ethernet connections), so you’ll need to reconfigure them afterward.
5. Reinstall Printer Drivers and Firmware Update
- Update Firmware: Go to the HP website and check for any firmware updates for your M140w. Sometimes, firmware issues can cause the printer to stop functioning correctly.
- Reinstall Printer Drivers: On your computer, try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer drivers to ensure there’s no conflict with the printing job.
6. Check the Printer’s Network Connection
- If you're printing wirelessly, ensure that the printer is properly connected to your Wi-Fi network. A lost connection can cause the printer to stop responding.
- Try printing a Wireless Network Test Report (usually found in the printer’s control panel under Network Settings or Wireless Settings).
7. Perform a Hard Reset (if necessary)
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
