HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28w, Toner Very Low message & yellow icon with dots

I have a new generic cartridge installed. (The original cartridge came with very little toner!)

I have Windows7 & Windows 10 PC’s, several iPads, and several PC Linux OS’s in use.

I get the LOW toner message on all devices. iPad Smart app, and Windows 10 smart app show VERY LOW TONER MESSAGE. 
The Linux HP printer manager also indicate low toner.

How do I disable the “auto protect’ mode for the cartridges? It can be done but I can’t find the sequence.

The printer is a bit more than a year in use, and the original cartridge ran out at about 8 months(we don’t print that often!).

so I need some help bypassing the HP nag about low toner, and that ‘yellow’ icon with dots in it?

BTW, I know what that yellow icon with dots means! But putting in a new cartridge SHPULD have made it go away! DIDN’T!!
