Hi @Ucsa_Amb

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw printer is having trouble obtaining an IP address via DHCP, and you're encountering errors when trying to set a manual IP or when attempting to scan to a network folder. This can be caused by a variety of network configuration issues. Let’s go through some troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem.

1. Check DHCP Settings on the Router

The first thing to check is whether your router's DHCP server is working correctly. If your printer can't get a DHCP IP address, it may be because the DHCP server is disabled or there is an issue with the router.

  • Check Router Settings: Log into your router’s configuration page (usually accessible by typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in a browser and entering your router's login credentials).
    • Verify that DHCP is enabled.
    • Ensure there are enough available IP addresses in the DHCP range for devices to be assigned an IP address.

2. Ensure Printer is Connected to the Right Network

Sometimes the printer may be connected to the wrong network (e.g., a guest network or an isolated network).

  • Check the Printer’s Network Connection:
    • On the printer’s display, go to the Network Setup or Wireless Setup options.
    • Ensure the printer is connected to the correct network (e.g., your main home or office network).
  • If you're using Wi-Fi, make sure the printer is within the range of your Wi-Fi network and that the Wi-Fi signal is strong.

3. Obtain an IP Address Automatically (DHCP)

If the printer cannot obtain an IP address automatically (via DHCP), let's try to reset the network settings on the printer and allow it to attempt to get an IP from the DHCP server again.

Reset Printer's Network Settings:

  1. On the printer, navigate to Settings > Network Setup > Restore Network Defaults (you may need to check the user manual if this is not the exact wording).
  2. Once the network settings are reset, the printer will attempt to get a new IP address from the DHCP server automatically.

After the reset, check if the printer has obtained an IP address:

  • You can print a network configuration page to check the IP address assigned to the printer. The IP address should appear on this report.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
